Nolan still working on script/casting, debunks CGI Joker rumor, confirms Hardy

Last night Warner Bros. held a party to celebrate the upcoming DVD / Blu-ray release of Inception. HitFix.com caught up with Christopher Nolan at the event, and asked for a status update on The Dark Knight Rises. Here’s an excerpt from the article:

[Christopher Nolan] also finds it hard to believe so many fans think he’s written, cast, shot and finished his films before he’s even started. In particular, “The Dark Knight Rising” at the moment, where he’s still just finishing the screenplay and hasn’t finished casting at all.  And make it clear Batman fans, this wasn’t Nolan just being humble for the sake of the press, he really thinks you all might be giving him just a bit too much credit.

THR also attended the event and asked Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas about the CGI Joker rumor that started to spread yesterday. Here’s what they had to say:

Nolan and his wife/producing partner Emma Thomas both swatted down the rumor to Heat Vision in a chat last night. “I heard the rumor,” said Thomas. “We’re not doing that.”

Nolan also denied that Ledger would show up in the new film. The script isn’t even completed yet, he said, and Nolan believes that Ledger’s performance as the Joker should be contained to the 2008 movie.

Since Nolan still hasn’t finished the script and casting, it looks like we won’t be getting that press release with the villains and a brief synopsis until early next year.

Update: Nolan sure did a lot of talking last night! Another report, this time from TOH, has Nolan confirming that Tom Hardy will join the cast of The Dark Knight Rises. When asked about Hardy’s involvement Nolan replied that it’ll be “a key role, not saying good or bad”.

    Nice!

Wow, that pic you posted of Nolan with some of the Inception cast really shows how PUUUURRRFECT Marion Cotillard would be if she were cast as Selina Kyle/Catwoman!

That woman is beautiful beyond belief in that picture!

Good writing man. I bet there will be some sort of Bat summit in January and that will be the start of the real news. Villains, Maybe a logo? Start of virals in Feb? IMDB plot outline? It seems like Nolan is getting back into Batman mode and putting the ball back on the tee from his garage again. I believe him when he says the script isn’t all the way finished because it’s a important movie for the whole genre and you want to keep evolving your ideas getting to principal photography. I think whatever rumors that the community thinks are true give the vaguest hint of what Chris is doing. We might think Hardy is in a Joker or R’as role but he might only be a small cog in a larger story. I still think there is a main villain role to be filled and we’re going to get a older actor a la Liam Neeson. Chris isn’t going to straight adapt 2 Hugo Strange arcs from the 70s he’s probably going to reach back again to events close to year one, the original books, elements from Dark Victory, plus canon from the previous films…it’s a pretty crazy film to make because there are so many roads to go down to do it right.

Lets hope for more of a announcement by the end of the year but I think late January will be the time to really know what this film will be about. How much did you know about Inception this early before production? It would be awesome to get the cast in February for a April production..

Not bringing Joker back is a smart move. I mean his fate is ambitious, but if he’s executed or put away forever in Arkham, then that should be that. No one can level or top Ledger’s performance. The Joker should be left alone and they need to move on to another villain or villains perfect for this version of Batman. Say…Hugo Strange or Hush.
