Harry Potter breaks The Dark Knight’s opening weekend record

In 2008, The Dark Knight made box office history, raking in $158 million in it’s first opening weekend. It held onto that record for three years, but today, there’s a new box office King. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 opened last Friday, and pulled in a record breaking $168 million this weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, 43% of that gross was due to 3D ticket prices, which are slightly more expensive. Still, critics and fans around the world seem to love the final Harry Potter movie, and its success is well deserved.

Batman fans got excited for Harry Potter when we learned that the teaser trailer for The Dark Knight Rises was attached to it. I hear that the teaser trailer will be making it’s way online, officially, some time tomorrow. Stay tuned to Batman-News.com, I’ll have it up here as soon as it hits the web! Do you think The Dark Knight Rises will be able to dethrone Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 next summer? Let me know in the comments.

People went there to see the Dark Knight Riser Teaser Trailer…case closed :-)

    • http://twitter.com/WWEhighlightvid Mattitude follower

It would of made a shit-load of money even if it didn’t have the trailer, but I’m sure the TDKR trailer certainly helped, lol.

    • bradley

And ticket prices are WAY more expensive than they were back when TDK came out. If you counted the number of tickets sold. I bet it would be a totally different story.

    • Downs005

Doubt it, everyones been looking forward to DKR for four years, everyones been looking forward to the last potter film for ten. Also, most infuriatingly, the trailer wasn’t even attached to the 3d version, at least as far as I saw. The trailer was icing on the cake, but nobody would have just gone to the movie to see a trailer that had been leaked online, especially if that meant sitting through trailers for “Happy Feet Two”

  • http://twitter.com/WWEhighlightvid Mattitude follower

I loved Harry potter, so I have no problem with it holding the top spot….

    For now, heheheheheheheheheheh….HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

    Soon, gotham will be mine!!!

  • The Daly Knight

haha that was one of the reasons why i went to see Potter, but it was also to see the end of a great franchise and next year we will see another one end, the only difference is that it will be The dark Knight that ends. If Potter only got $10 million more on it’s final film, imagine what The Dark Knight Rises will get? :) Plus the 3D gave it a big push and TDKR won’t be in 3D it doesn’t need the extra price tickets to be a box office hit.

    • http://batman-news.com Batman-News.com

Well TDK was shown in IMAX theaters, which are more expensive. I’m not sure how 3D/IMAX ticket prices compare though. TDKR will be shot in IMAX too, so it will have that as an advantage.

      • The Daly Knight

yeah i guess so, i didn’t know IMAX was about the same ticket price as 3D and yeah it does have the IMAX advantage. Still glad they scrapped the 3D, it would just ruin it for me. Not the biggest fan of 3D. TDKR get that record back for the franchise :P

    • JonnyMal_24

Wow. Did you figure this all out by yourself? What a waste of my time. Don’t do that again.

      • The Daly Knight

sorry for wasting your time mate. Just so excited for this film man.

  • Anonymous

The final , Potter film was BRILLIANT , and it deserves this accolade , i dont realy care what Batman movies make at the Box Office ( i know its important they make money ) but , i kind of hated it when TDK , became mainstream .

    • Anonymous

      Hipster Bat-fan!

Just joking. Though I should say, I for for one loved that my fave hero was getting public and critical acclaim in such an awesome movie that made cinema history, I live for that shit, man.

      • Anonymous

        LOL , i have never been called a Hipster before = )

I hear what your saying , it was good that Batman finaly got mainstream recognition , i am just a bit over protective of my fave character .

    • http://grauskala.blogspot.com/ One_Eyed_Willie

Agree! People keep discussing box offices, Heath’s Oscar, etc, etc… this is shit, meaningless! Fuck the Oscar as well… If a great film hits one billion, fine! But for me, the only matter is these great Batman stories being filmed by a talented director, with passion to the character and respect to the fan base [not fanboys!]

      • Anonymous

Dude , its good to hear from you , after Brazil v Paraguy , i thought you might of jumped of a bridge or something , I thought us English were bad a penaltys , 4 pens , 4 misses = ( At least Argintina did not do any better = )

Yeah , i feel the same , i dont care about Box Office or Awards , as long as its a great film !

        • http://grauskala.blogspot.com/ One_Eyed_Willie

hahahah! Man, I was JUST waiting for you recall me this! I knew you would write bout that… well, I told ya: the coach is an asshole, the team is too defensive! Time for him to quit the job…

“HArrY Potter SUckS ASS, DARK KniogHT BEAT IT S PUSSY ASS FUCK YEAH BOTCH”

If THIS is your attitude about the whole thing, then you need to get a grip.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GX2QLFAKPKVUJZ74TP7ORWPGOQ TheDude

Adjusted for inflation it did not break the record held by The Dark Knight. Since The Dark Knight actually made 172 million dollars.

  • bradley

I want a less cheesy reboot of Harry Potter. They don’t need to stay completely true to the source material. Maybe they could add an ancient technological element.

  • Anonymous

Of course HP7 prt2 was gonna do that, that was to be expected… But that picture, ‘effin freaked me out!

  • http://twitter.com/SHotMBlog SuperherooftheMonth

    First, that picture is AWESOME!
Second, we really shouldn’t expect anything less. Harry Potter is a worldwide phenomenon, And these last few — “Half-Blood Prince” and the two “Deathly Hallows” films — have, like The Dark Knight, been great FILMS in their own right. If there was a franchise that could, and should, have dethroned TDK, this was it.
In any case, I really doubt Warner’s is worried. Ha, ha! They have a huge hit on their hands now, and a guaranteed huge hit on their hands this time next year!

    • Anonymous

Yeah , Potter was EPIC , just like TDKR will be , i guess to sum this story up WB are laugthing all the way to the bank .

      • Guanoman

Hahaha, no they’re not. That first weekend gross is about how much they LOST when the ruined Green Lantern.

        • Anonymous

LOL , Yeah Green Lantern was BAD , shame it had so much potential , shame we can not clone Nolan and have him direct every DC movie !

    • http://twitter.com/_Corporal Corporal

Half Blood Prince was the best potter film to date in my opinion. I think the way the cut up move one and two of half blood prince was wrong, their was SO MUCH action  in this new film and so much happened so fast, Personally they could have done a better job hot they split them up. the last film they found only ONE hocrox and in this film they found 6 and this film was shorter. they defiantly should cut the flim in half at the point where they found the secound hocrox inorder to balance things out at least. in my mind, just saying! sorry for rampling, this had nothing to do with TDKR but i had to get that out their! lol

      • Anonymous

Yeah , i hear what your saying , i did not like Deathly Hallows part 1 , nothing happened , but i loved part 2 , that was one Epic movie , they could of spread the action , over the 2 movies a bit more evenly , i hope when the Blu Ray comes out , they release Deathly Hallows as one EPIC 4 hour finalie , What this has to do with a Batman news site i dont know = ) Sorry

  • Eddy Nashton

Not to rain on Harry Potter’s parade, but if there was a way to determine statistically how many tickets were purchased by Batman fans to simply see the teaser trailer, I know The Dark Knight would still reign.

But that’s ok…he’ll easily take it back next summer! Let Harry have his fun.

    • http://twitter.com/_Corporal Corporal

The only reason we went to go see the movie was cause i wanted to see the trailer, personal, the last harry movie wasn’t nearly as good some of the others, not at all. too much happend, and it all happened too fast.
MY BIGGEST FEAR, is the thrid Batman Film isn’t gonna hold up to 2nd. I have Faith in Nolan. In Nolan we trust.  BUT… Dark Knight was such an amazing movie, truely to this, **(forgetting that i am a batman fan)** The movie is one of my top three fav films ever. Story line, The fliming, the action, the build up in the suspenseful parts, the music, the sound effects, it was perfect…
Dark Knights ONLY flaw was Rachel’s roll played My Maggie Gyllenhall. That was DISAPPOINTING to say the least. other wise the movies gets a 10 out of 10 from me.!

      • RP

I always liked Maggie, but I have to agree that she was very disappointing in TDK. Not like Katie Holmes was incredible, but she was good in a relatively boring role in Begins. Too bad she didn’t come back.

        • http://grauskala.blogspot.com/ One_Eyed_Willie

I think the exactly opposite way: the only flaw of Begins was Katie casting. Maggie is much more talented and versatile actress. Katie only keep repeating that “surprised-naive” little girl facial expression. The scene when she was poisoned by the toxin in Begings was LAME!

If you don’t like Maggie, just take a look at the movie “Secretary” and you’ll change your minds!

    • http://twitter.com/WWEhighlightvid Mattitude follower

I refuse to watch the trailer anymore until it’s officially released in HD, oh yeah.

  • Slask

1 word: 3D.  Without it, TDK rules.

  • http://www.nolanfans.com TeddyBlass

Nice banner image. You make that yourself?

    • http://batman-news.com Batman-News.com

Thanks, I thought it fit the story pretty well lol. I wish I had the Photoshop skills to pull that off. It was the 3rd result in a Google Image search for “Harry Potter Batman”.

  • Model_102

hey i found a pretty cool interview w/ tom hardy talking about meeting charlie bronson and making the film
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2eze39KGV4 this part 1 & heres part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hxu-dxkz4I&feature=related

    • http://grauskala.blogspot.com/ One_Eyed_Willie

Great find, dude! Hardy is such a good actor, and a funny guy! Bronson is spectacular, and this interview shows how this film deserves merits.

  • http://grauskala.blogspot.com/ One_Eyed_Willie

Yeah, HP needed 7 movies to reach that score… TDK was only one damn flick and did the job well!

  • Mason Drumm

I would hope that ANY conclusion to an 8part movie series would be that successful. Now just imagine how how much more awesome Nolan’s conclusion will be. If tdk got 158m and hp got 168m I’m guessing a 200m opening weekend for TDKR. Any other guesses for what TDKR will make opening weekend?

  • daris

YES IT WILL ,CASE CLOSED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(in Batman voice) WHERE IS THE TRAILER?

    • Antrozous

The night is darkest just before the dawn but I promise you, the dawn is coming, and so is the online trailer…

      • http://www.chaosjester.blogspot.com Manos Jester

I really wish the chanting wasn’t so cheesy. I’m not 11 anymore (to find it epic). What the hell, the rest of the trailer is gold. Also, look at a picture I found

        • Anonymous

As for , the chanting i read somewere that it is Moracan for , He will rise , i imagine , this being chanted , as he is climbing out of that pit , that is a great pic , great find !

        • Antrozous

I guess the chanting will make a lot more sense once we get to see the movie, right now seems a little out of context…

That trilogy picture is pretty cool!

        • http://grauskala.blogspot.com/ One_Eyed_Willie

We must see the movie to figure the context of the chanting… don’t worry, we’ll not regret! Actually, I love the chanting in the trailer…

          Very cool image, great find!

        • The Daly Knight

wow! that should definately be the box-set cover, sell out within days haha

      • RP

I know we all have our own reactions to things, but I can’t imagine why you think the chanting is cheesy. I’m more than three times the age of 11, but I think the chanting is pretty creepy and cool.

        • Antrozous

I´m sure you intended to reply to Manos Jester´s comment right? Persnally I don´t find it cheesy what so ever, as I said it will make sense for Bane´s character…

Btw, it´s monday over here so bring on the teaser trailer!

  • Guest

I think it will beat Harry Potter, honestly. It’s running off a shit ton of hype.

Also, you used the wrong version of “its” in this report. Just letting you know (“its” success is well deserved, not “it’s”).

  • Kiara

Well I went to HP7 pt. 2 for the Teaser sooo I know that it’ll probably get close to the sales.

  • Anonymous

I could care less about how much money a movie makes.  It’s easy to jack up the price of movie tickets, especially with these 3D films.  If only they keep a tally of how many tickets were purchased.   Eh, this doesn’t matter to me…. I’m quite sure more people paid to see The Dark Knight than the new Harry Potter film.

    • Mason Drumm

Got this from an msnbc article today: “Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ does have the advantage of 3-D screenings, which cost a few dollars more than 2-D shows. Because of the higher 3-D price, plus regular inflation, “Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ sold fewer tickets than “The Dark Knight” over opening weekend.

  • Collector03601

I’m sure The Dark Knight Rises will have a great success and I’m double sure all of us here will go see it many times….and thats just few of Nolan’s massive fanbase he earned with his talent so no worries about not breaking the HP record…

  • Antrozous

Just reminded of something; even if TDKR scores big time next summer and take down Harry Potter that record would only last until christmas since I strongly believe The Hobbit will sell even more tickets…

Eitherway, the most important for me is for this trilogy to end with a great story supported by great performances.

    • Anonymous

I am Batman , all the way 100 % , but i would not be able to pick between , The Amazing Spiderman , The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises for top Box office next summer !

      • Antrozous

The Amazing Spiderman? Nahh, Peter Parker´s new franchise has nothing on The Dark Knight neither The Avengers. They may have a huge fan-base but Batman appeals to a more adult generic audience. Besides, this is an ending story so everybody wants to see how it goes down. A year from now The Dark Knight Rises will rule the summer.

        • David

That’s right.Even people who are not hard core batman fans will go to see it because they wanna know how Nolan’s ended his story.Nolan’s work is now acclaimed by a lot of people all over the world.Just look at the success of his Inception.Although it was not a comic book,it sold very well. Now imagine how things are gonna be with Batman.Besides,we know little about the story, yet we’re so excited. When more news are told and we are shown a trailer,oh God,I’m sure the excitement will end up Batman breaking the box office record.

          • Walker Texas Danger

Aren’t we all forgetting the last part of ‘Twilight’? After all it broke the opening day records of TDK with no 3D and IMAX.

  • Stephen92895

im sure that when TDKR comes out on July 20, 2012 it will hold the new record at around 200 million dollars

  • Samantha

    uh, YES

  • Anonymous

“its success,” not “it’s success.”  No apostrophe, it’s not possessive.

    • http://batman-news.com Batman-News.com

      Thank you. Fixed.

  • DS

I DO think that the next Batman will break the record.

I mean, people are getting real excited for just the teaser poster.
    We’ll see.

  • Bazman05

Seeing as the “gimmicky” 3D was the main reason why the awful Harry Potter took over from the Dark Knight, I think it had the unfair advantage and I would still say the Dark Knight is top.

  • resudes

The only reason HP has exceeded TDK is because of 3D – TDK never needed to rely upon gimmicks to set box office records because it just has everything that makes a great film. I’m not a fan of 3D at all – the only recent film that successfully used it is Avatar in my opinion.

  • renegatefx

The Dark Knight Rises doesen’t need 3D technology. It has Christopher Nolan .

Batman 3 will break all the records if u ask me. I´ts gonna be the best of the best. Number 1 in imdb top 250. And the best trilogy ever. The DARK KNIGHT RISES!!!!

    • Bazman05

I’d have to disagree with you there. TDKR is certainly not a kids movie so you loose a key demographic which Harry Potter had is spades and its not in 3D so lower ticket prices. As for beating TDK, I think the death of Heath Ledger was a factor in it doing as well as it did and hopefully nothing similar will happen to TDKR cast, but I do hope you’re right, and I have my fingers crossed that it will beat the terrible HP.

We’ll blow that record away.  When The Dark Knight Rises comes out, it will sell more tickets and make twice as much as that pubescent wizard.

  • abw2

I actually saw Harry Potter 7 this past weekend with my kid niece. I thought it was pretty decent, but IMO, The Dark Knight was still a better movie.

    AND

I highly suspect that TDKR will knock both HP 7 and TDK right out of the ballpark all together. Of course, I may very well be seeing this because I am a huge HUGE Batman fan. I love the hero himself as well as most all the supporting characters both on and off of the big-screen (especially the way Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan portrayed/has portrayed them in the past).

God some of these big-time Summer 2012 films just can’t come along and hit the big-screen fast for my taste. P :)

  • Isaac

the picture above better not come true

  • Anonymous

LOL Of course TDKR will beat harry potter and any other movie that comes out in 2012. It will be…. No It is the most anticipated movie of all time.Mark my words Christopher Nolan will not let us down  he’s got alot of heart for story telling.Think of how many people knew the ending to harry potter from reading the book.We have very little to go on what we know about TDKR.

    • Bazman05

Why? Harry Potter had the 3D (higher ticket price) and the younger audience’s. As far as TDK goes, it had a major cast member die before it was released which would of brought in that little bit extra. Hopefully that won’t happen for TDKR but it will lose out because of it. I want TDKR to beat HP as much as anyone here but you take all this into account, and I don’t think it will surpass HP (the “gimmicky” 3D cheats in the box-office anyway) but it will come close.
