Exclusive: Details on Catwoman in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

When you run a website like Batman-News.com, you get sent tips and “scoops” almost every day. I do my best to filter out the BS, and just deliver news from reliable sources here. Back in June I received a tip from a source claiming to know details about Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises. One of the things mentioned was “she steals the Batpod” and at the time, I thought that sounded too cool to be true. Well, now Warner Bros. has officially released a picture of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman on top of the Batpod, which means there’s probably some truth in that report I received. Here it is in full… if you’re avoiding details about Catwoman’s backstory, you may not want to continue.

Catwoman is apparently one of the most well written characters we’ve seen in these movies so far and she could potentially steal the show the way Heath Ledger did last time. She does some cool stuff in the movie like jumping out of windows and stealing the Batpod. Her back story is that she has a history of abuse and works as a stripper and is also a pickpocket.

And if you weren’t blown away by Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman costume, don’t worry. A completely separate source informed me that Catwoman will be wearing a cowl at some point in The Dark Knight Rises. I’m not as confident in this source yet, so I’m passing this info along for the sake of discussion. As always this should be taken as rumor until it’s proven to be official, but I have no reason to doubt the accuracy in the first report regarding Selina Kyle’s backstory. What do you think of this news? Let me know in the comments.

Stripper/abuse seems dark at first but then again it is a Nolan/PG-13 version of the character.

    • joe kerr

they seem to have managed it quite well with the joker in TDK despite the PG 13 rating, so i wouldn’t be worried

Sounds great, especially about the role being potentially the best written. As much as I love these movies I felt that Rachel got the thin end of the wedge in the previous films (though Maggie Gyllenhaal did far better with the material than was her name).

This all sounds great, especially if it means I might be more likely to see Juno Templemight play Holly Robinson (if the stripper angle part form Year One is indeed used).

That said, I will be taking this with the world’s largest chunk of salt…

Nolan will create the best catwoman there is!

    • Shades4

Can Anne Hathaway pull off this complex character as Heath ledger did with the joker?

      • http://grauskala.blogspot.com/ OneEyedWillie

I think isn’t fair to do that kind of comparision… c’mon, another character, another flick, another plot. I’m sure the next Selina Kyle will do great, but it’s like compare Vito Corleone with Michael Corleone, or Darth Vader to Han Solo… you know what i mean?

        But, i don’t bought those infos… striper? Pickpocket? I don’t know…

  • Knewsome79

  • The Dork Knight

Well the stripper bit is very reminiscent to Batman Year One

  • Caped Crusader87

I have to give it to Nolan the story seems very reasonable It’s better then haveing like 900 cats eat Selina Kyle’s hands up again like Batman Return’s story of catwome

    • Walker Texas Danger

Everything in a Tim Burton movie has to be bizarre, garish and even grotesque. A stripper cat woman would be too plain and stand out :)

      • Caped Crusader87

Yea u got a point there but I think it shows a differnt side of catwomen :) but what u think of bane I think he looks good but I can’t stop thinking of Jason vorhees when I see him

        • Walker Texas Danger

Nolan is the sort of guy who nails his script before casting, and what we see in the movie could be completely different from the set pics here. So Bane being short or his costume does not worry me at this point. So regardless of how many spoilers we get, I’m still expecting the movie to be mind-blowing :)

          • http://grauskala.blogspot.com/ OneEyedWillie

Yeah, i think we don’t have any clues yet! I personally don’t bought those infos about stripers and pickpockets… well, Juno Temple maybe, but Selina Kyle will have a major importance, i think Nolan reserves something special… Striper in a PG-13 flick? I doubt it! I prefer to know nothing from her! Bane’s being too spoiled already!

  • joe kerr

i’d like this movie filled with easter eggs as TDK was

Ugh! Why a stripper? What does it have to do with being a thief?

I’m disappointed Nolan’s not coming up with something more creative for her origin. Why look to work on the same lines as Miller’s cheesy and tacky origin for Catwoman?

    • someguy

Nolan didn’t invent this, it’s part of the source material ;)

      • Anonymous

Not exactly. Catwoman was created as a thief and romantic foil to Batman in 1940. She was not a prostitute until Miller’s Year One

        • Santos352x

1940 comicbook style of writing was different…her a being a prostitute gives her a more realistic approach in Nolan’s movies. u act like catwomen in the 1940 ultimatley moral, she was a freakin theif and con artist..

          • Anonymous

“her a being a prostitute gives her a more realistic approach in Nolan’s movies.”

Explain that statement. I’ve heard it many times as a reasoning for keeping that origin but I don’t don’t understand the logic behind that. Why is being a prostitute any more “realistic” than being  an orphan who’s had to fend for herself? Are u saying that’s the only option for young women in her situation? What about Amanda Waller. She grew up poor in a tough neighborhood too and she was able to make it out of there without resorting to prostitution.

By your reasoning, since Talia’s in a Nolan movie she should be a prostitute too. Or if I called your mother a prostitute, I’m really giving her a more “realistic” background.

As for her 1940’s origin, yes she was a thief and con-artist. So what? I never said that was more moral than a prostitute, but that’s what she was created as.

      • Thefundamental

        chipsnopotatoes, you’re completely right.

This backstory for the character would be horrible, especially given that the majority of true comic fans DISAPPROVE of Miller’s cop-out choice to make Selina a prostitute.

I pray this is false. It doesn’t sound like something Nolan would opt for. He usually doesn’t need to go this route; he does a fine job with his characters otherwise.

Stripper part came from one of the best batman comics ever written “Batman: Year One” written by Frank Miller. Stripper, theif, abused, pickpocketer…its call given the character a story or background. This is getting intresting….

        No, it’s called misogyny.

        • http://www.facebook.com/stevenv.zoeller Steven Zoeller

Yes, because a story in which a woman ascends from prostitution to becoming one of the greatest antiheroes of all time is inherently misogynistic.

“becoming one of the greatest antiheroes of all time”

That’s DESPITE Miller not because of him. If I recall correctly, Miller’s vision for Selina in Dark Knight Returns is a fat aging madam humiliated by the Joker. Not misogynistic?

I like the backstory… sort of like Frank Miller’s origin of her in “Year One” of being a prostitute, and in my opinion, any material based off of the genius ideas of Frank Miller (one of the greatest writers in comic history…) sounds golden to me.

Genius ideas? More like prostituting himself to further some bat editor’s agenda, if you ask me

One of the interesting theories out there on why Catwoman was made into a prostitute:

      http://www.slideshare.net/branding-disasters/destroying-your-brand

      • joe schmoe

A stripper backstory gives her what she needs to be understood as extremely nimble and agile, using sex as a weapon, and a simple need for defensive capabilities. This builds on the up-and-coming normal person story of achieving a greatness, as opposed to some kleptomaniac that just happened to learn how to steal really well. Worked for Nolan’s Batman, worked for Nolan’s Joker

This sounds fantastic. I mean to hear that Catwoman is a very “well written” part just gives me goosebumps and more excitement already. I think people should relax about the costume, it’s in the early stage so I ain’t worried. You know what is even more exciting and awesome about TDKR is there is going to be strong female presences top to bottom. I mean you have Anne Hathaway and Marion Cotillard (oscar nominated and oscar winner respectively) in very meaty roles, Juno Temple is a significant role and Joey King in what could be a very significant part. Nolan has caught flack for having little to no female presences in this franchise, I think he’s done quite alright with this one so far. I frickin love this cast and can’t wait!

A lot of people around the net have been protesting the costume. Most that I’ve come across say that she should the ears and that Nolan’s costume looks stupid. I, for one, think the costume looks fantastic and it goes with the story and the realistic ambience that Nolan has created. As for the backstory I am defienetly on board. Besides, its Chris Nolan, he can do no wrong. Right?

    Closer look to Catwoman’s mask

  • Diego

Catwoman, in her first appearance, wore no costume or disguise at all,
and it was not until her next appearance that she donned a mask, which
was a theatrically face-covering cat-mask that had the appearance of a
real cat, rather than a more stylized face mask seen in her later

I thinking there using parts of the long holloween and parts of year one for selina kyle which is pretty cool with me, i saw better set pics of the suit it looks more like the long holloweens cat suite, just with out the cat cowl and tail and purple look, just looking at the long gloves that go up her arms and long thigh high boats very long halloween, mix with hush Im wondering if show this catwoman will have a whip or not ?

“She does some cool stuff in the movie like jumping out of windows”

I find it hard to take this source seriously when his first example of “cool stuff” is jumping out of a window.

That’s awesome because the whole time I’m watching Dark Knight I’m thinking, this movie would be sooooo much cooler if somebody jumped out of a window.

And why would she wear a cowl and why should I be happy about that?  Catwoman doesn’t wear a cowl.

    • BatFan

i don’y know … i think i would very much like hathaway as the sexy Cat with the whip and the cowl and sexy cat moves rather than the super high-tech Burgler like those spy movies … but im totally fine if she wears no cowl =) … i have utter and complete faith in Nolan !

Well the backstory seems very possible, especially considering the fact that Nolan looks to Batman Year One for inspiration. You all probably know that she’s a prostitute in Year One.

      So what?

Contrary to popular belief, Catwoman was not created by Frank Miller.

Ha! Sorry if I sound like a broken record, but I’m surprised that a lot of people think Catwoman was born out Batman Year One. She’s got a much richer history than that.

no one said Frank Miller created her, all he said was that Nolan looks to Year One for inspiration. and in Year One, she was a prostitute.

Thanks for the info!  The stripping thing makes sense given how Hathaway was embarrassed about her “training.”  And I think the abuse is drawn from Year One and will make her quite the empowered figure by the end of the movie.

Hey it’s a long time until summer 2012, this may be the way she looks, or maybe not.
Either way I’m looking forward to it.

Noland has done a great job with Batman, I admit, that I was a Ledger hater, before watching the movie. But Nolan won me over, and I won’t make the same mistake again this time, because of ONE set of pics with btw a smoking hot Anne, lacking ears or mask.

I’m telling you, Catwoman will be awesome. Nolan has brought back the basics and will continue to do so. And I’m pretty sure this is not the final look of Catwoman anyway,

    Peace out

Interesting what they said in the article especaily the part about her being a stripper and stealing money, because I found this in Wikiepedia about Catwoman and it seems to me they be using this idea.
Selina’s childhood, neglects Maggie’s existence. Maria Kyle is a distant parent who preferred to spend her time with cats, and commits suicide when Selina is very young. Her alcoholic father, Brian, is cold to Selina for resembling her mother (whom he resents for dying), and eventually drinks himself to death. To survive, Selina takes to the streets for a time before being caught and sent first to an orphanage, then juvenile hall, “where Selina began to see how hard the world could really be. Maggie’s fate at this point in the time-line is not alluded to. However, when Ed Brubaker reintroduces her into the comic, he implies that Maggie may have directly entered an orphanage and promptly been adopted.

When she is 13, Selina discovers that the hall’s administrator has been embezzling funds, and she confronts him. In an attempt to cover up his crime, the administrator puts Selina in a bag and drops her in a river to drown (like a cat). She escapes and returns to the orphanage, where she steals documents exposing the administrator’s corruption. She uses these to blackmail the administrator into erasing “Selina Kyle” from the city’s records, then steals the administrator’s diamond necklace and escapes the orphanage. Selina eventually finds herself in “Alleytown – a network of cobblestone streets that form a small borough between the East End and Old Gotham.” Selina is taken in by Mama Fortuna, the elderly leader of a gang of young thieves, and is taught how to steal. Fortuna treats her students like slaves, keeping their earnings for herself. Selina eventually runs away, accompanied by her friend Sylvia. However, the two have difficulty surviving on their own, and in desperation try to support themselves by working as prostitutes. The two drift apart afterward, with Sylvia coming to resent Selina for not inquiring about what had happened to her at the hands of her abusive first client.

Selina (now an adult) achieves some success as a thief. Following a disastrous burglary, however, she accepts an offer to “lie low” as a dominatrix in the employ of a pimp named Stan. They plan to trick men into divulging information that might be used in future crimes. According to this storyline, Selina trains under the Armless Master of Gotham City, receiving education in martial arts and culture. During this time, a client gives her a cat o’ nine tails, which Selina kept as a trophy.

Selina is led to a bit of burglary, she dons a catsuit costume that her now former pimp gave to her the day that she told him she was out of the business. After costuming herself so as not to be revealed, she gets a taste for burglary and begins to do it in more of a Robin Hood way than an actual thief. This is, however, how she runs into Batman. After a small confrontation, she begins to be inspired to stay in her costume and become the “Catwoman” after seeing Batman in action with others. Selina gets the idea that, if there is a “bat”, why can there not be a “cat”?

and this PART! they might use.Catwoman also appears in the Batman: Knightfall saga, where she is approached by Bane’s henchmen while robbing a house. Bane asks her to work for him, but she refuses, as she is repulsed by the criminal who “broke” Batman. Later in the story, she boards a plane with Bruce Wayne to fly to Santa Prisca. She next appears in the Batman: Knightquest saga, where Azrael is masquerading as Batman. She is one of the few to recognize that Batman is an impostor, later being present when the true Batman returns to the fold as he struggles against his successor, his willingness to save even criminals confirming his true identity for Selina.

Sounds like it references a lot of Year One.

  • Geeky Randy

I’m not really into this backstory—maybe it’ll grow on me.  It just seems more of a Burton idea than a Nolan idea.  This forced backstory reminds of me The Joker’s backstory in “Batman (1989)”.

    • Thebatfan

I think a Burton idea would probably be more alongs the line of going insane because she was fired from work and has to spend all day with cats (I know its crappy, but strange like Burton) but I do admit this stripper thing dosnt seem like a Nolan thing. Maybe something out of a Guy Ritchie movie and even thats pushing it.

    • Anonymous

Burton and story? LOL. Burton cares more about image and style and very little about story. The Joker’s backstory is based on The Killing Joke, not something Burton came up with. Backstories make sense in Nolan’s movies since he’s more interested in expelling the psychology behind why people do the things they do.

You know what I love about that movie?? the Batman logo (tim burton’s) at Cobb’s door, Nolan put it there like 7 years before he got the Batman project so that’s gotta mean something, he loves Batman the same as all we do

Well the stripper back story dose kind of explain why she’s had to have dance training.

I loved TDK and if she steals the show like Heath Ledger I would find it hard to beat but that would b great! I knew Ann Hathaway could be a great choice for catwoman and this could change her career completely.

I do support the catwoman villain completely but now that I have a chance to complain I think they Nolan should’ve tried Harley Quinn. Perfect chance for her with Joker probably sent tO the rebuilt Arkham. He dies she goes crazy. Though I do understand that she would really need to either match or out do Heath Ledgers performance which for a lot of actresses may be hard to do.

His voice sounds weird, sounds a bit like an old man, they’ll probably alter it a bit in editing. “…and she could potentially steal the show the way Heath Ledger did last time.”
I think this comment is very, VERY dangerous. I mean, could cause a huge and disproportional/dishonest expectation, no good for the appreciation of the movie and the actress interpretation. I think we don’t have to go to see the movie thinking in how X or Y could top Heath’s work, it’s simply can not be! I prefer to accept this flick as a brand new piece, the more I could detach from the previous the better. Yeah, I know it will be hard but i’ll try.

  • http://grauskala.blogspot.com/ OneEyedWillie

In my opinion, the Y-1 prostitute Catwoman is cool for THAT story. Miller did a great job giving some decay for her. But here in Nolan vision… well, i would love to see her as a hooker, but i strongly doubt it! We’ll have a PG-13 movie, how the hell Nolan could put prostitution in the story??

I really would like to see her as a double duty, some mafia insider that rebels against them… mob criminal by day, and fighting crime at night time! What a cool dualism this would be? A real anti-hero type!

And why for fuck sakes she’s got to have pointy cat ears anyway? A cowl maybe, but depends… well, she’s a stealer, so a cowl will help her to hide away… but EARS??? C’mon… what for? To make the bad guys laugh and have some fetich thoughts? Sorry dudes, but i’m tired of reading bullshit…
Just wanted to get it off my chest!

    • Antrozous

Well Willie I think I might have found Catwoman´s lost ears…

On the other day someone spoke briefly about the existance of a mask beneath the high-tech glasses and after studying the official picture I came up with this possibility:

The glasses will flip up and willstand on yop of Annes head; pay atention to her hairdo clearly indicating that in practical terms it´s advizable to have your hair back and what for? For the glasses to go there.

Now pay atention, with the glasses pointing up you get two pointy objects in both ends which would be those sights or whatever that is, just check this brief skecth I made(if someone could crop and rotate the glasses would be great….

What do you think of this possibility? It would be practical and simbolical at the same time althought not what was expected but remember it´s Nolan, Batman eras serve for comunications antenas so if the cat gets some ears they must have a function of some kind not so much style.

      • http://grauskala.blogspot.com/ OneEyedWillie

A mask beneath the glasses… man, I really don’t know… I think is too much, but hell, why not? Could be a possibility! I can figure it out… yeah… but I afraid that Selina will go a lot high tech in Nolan version! The AEON FLUXX style doesn’t bothers me at all, that’s really fine by me!Besides, I think maybe this isn’t the full costume… about the ears, my point is if she use cat ears /antenas maybe she looks a lot like Batgirl, you know? That will be a shame! ‘Course, at some point of the movies she could perfectly put some sort of cowl, or use some kind of weapon that ressembles a whip, why not? Not that i hope this coming, but you know…

Got ya! Yeah, would be cool… but again, as a stealer, a robber, some kind of wider mask, or *sigh* cowl would hide her face better… i just trying to think Nolanian here! LOL!
BUT if she’s NOT a robber, well… this chick is causing a lot of buzz! Reminds me the Joker’s permawhite!

My guess this is an early view of her. Notice she has long hair. Maybe Bane, a cop, or even Batman or someone pulls her hair. To make sure that doesn’t happen again, and being inspired by Batman she makes her own “Catlike” cowl.

I was really hoping for more of a Robin Hood type; She would be someone that breaks or hacks into corporate enterprises to take their money or expose their secrets.  I thought that would be a natural way for her to learn about Batman, if she believed that Bruce Wayne was a tool not living up to his father’s legacy and broke into Wayne Enterprises only to find all the Batman stuff.  I’m not sure how you can see someone transform from a basic pickpocket to a superheroine/villain in one film, but I trust Nolan.

I like it!  Personally I would have preferred short hair on Selina, but that’s just me.

The whole stripper/abuse world of catwoman exactly the same backstory from the catwoman in Batman : Year One, so it fits well Nolan’s team has yet again done their homework just like the first 2 films and using materials from the comic book.

Why the hell would catwoman wear a cowl!? I’m just not feeling Hathaway as Catwoman, but Nolan has done amazing things, so I’ll trust him.

I was able to visit TDKR set! Check out my pics. I stood exactly where Catwoman did!
