Anne Hathaway responds to ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Catwoman criticism [Update]

When Warner Bros. released the first photo of Catwoman from The Dark Knight Rises last week, there were some mixed reactions from the fans. Some people loved it, while others were left wanting more. In a recent interview with MTV, Anne Hathaway responds to some of this criticism. Her response? “What I am happy to say is, if you didn’t like the photo, you only see about a 10th of what that suit can do. And if you did like the photo, you have excellent taste”. On working with Christopher Nolan:

I’m having a lot of fun working on Chris Nolan’s ‘Batman,’ the latest Batman movie. I’m having an absolute blast doing it, but it’s very big. The thing that’s wonderful about Chris is that he is the most successful person in Hollywood at the moment, but his movies aren’t Hollywood. It feels like you’re making an indie. He’s actually a really alternative filmmaker. He just happens to have like a seven billion figure budget. [Laughs] I like to call him Hitchcock, but he blows things up.

It’s disappointing. I think everyone feels a slight frustration with it because those stills so undercut the work that’s being done. No, no one’s nervous about it. I mean, honestly, like, wait till you see this movie. Chris is doing insane things in it. And it’s gonna be marvelous and it’s gonna be way beyond what anyone imagines that it could be. You can’t imagine the things that he’s doing, at least I couldn’t until I read the script and I was like, ‘You’re really? Okay, you’re going there!” And it’s Chris Nolan; even the picture that he released of me, that’s not everything. That’s like a tenth of what the catsuit is. And I’ve got to say, I find it frustrating and I know he finds it frustrating, but I also think that he’s having fun with it, kind of like spooning out secrets. He has a lot more control than you think.

    Criticism?! There’s dumb people around the world indeed. How can you criticise something that was NOT made for you to evaluate but for you to entertain with? You can like or dislike something but be sure that there always be someone who will like what others don’t. Being a fan doesnt mean that you have the right to complain about everything you may see a little out of your taste, it means that you are able to see past through this and embrace the whole object of your appreciation as it is. I mean, we now may despise “Batman & Robin” but we all sure went to the theaters and enjoyed it back then. And thanks to that we have now this 3 new awesome movies.         You’re reading too much into what she meant by “what the suit can do”. It’s an expression not to be taken literally! If you want to take what she said literally, we haven’t seen anything of what the suit can do because it’s a picture that doesn’t move, and there’s no way to quantify how much is 10%. What she means is there’s more to the suit than is visible in the picture. I know batfans like to play detective with all the marketing and publicity, but people can get too anal about the smallest things.

    The suit only looks MEH to me because I hoped for a more Jim Lee look. However that being said, Nolan kills it everytime!! He doesn’t disapoint! I he wanted the suit to look that way, then it serves a purpose and will be good. I can get by what I wanted for looks…I mean come on, I wanted a joker, I got a new looking joker, and it was EPIC! So far the same seems to be said for Bane as well.

Bane looks DIFFERENT but in no ways bad. Seems like alot of fan boys don’t like change from the comics. But some suits do not translate well into live action.. imagine Wolverine in the Yellow spadex…

    I was reading an article about Anne Hathaway/Catwoman today at work, and saw what looked like another official photo. This time it was just her upper torso and she’s looking at the camera with a dark background. And she’s still wearing the goggles, and no cowl. I can’t remember the site, but has anyone else seen this? Surely, I couldn’t have imagined it.

    Ok , this is what i know so far from a man inside………. Bane destroys Gotham using the weapon of the speech video, just like that KABOOM  so Batman dies, everyone including Alfred thinks that’s the real deal ( i mean batman dead), the truth (but you never know this while its happening) is that bruces makes a journey to the league of shadows fort in some far far away land to discover the secret of Bane’s past life (who is he, what happened to him, who raised him, etcetc) and in that part of the plot is where the big surprises come to us….. Of course there’s no way to know what is the big srecret of Bane, don’t ever the actor know it so far

    I think it’s funny how people think they’re really learning anything from all this leaked footage. Nolan is super secretive with these movies. You think he’d really let the whole world hear Bane’s actual voice? See the full Catwoman outfit? He’s not going to let any major spoilers like that be filmed out in public so it can show up on youtube an hour later. All this is heavily managed and planned out.

    The criticism towards Catwoman’s suit in the “early stage” is absurd, so is the criticism towards the teaser trailer, and recently Tom Hardy Bane’s voice that will probably be altered when the final product comes out. I mean whatever happen to just being happy with litte snippets and teasers about TDKR. It also feels like that ever since filming began in Pittsburgh we’ve been getting a dozen set videos and it feels like every other day more and set photos get leaked. When filming took place in Scotland and England we saw a couple of pictures every now and then and like 1 video, they move to Pittsburgh and now Pittsburgh seems hell bent on giving away everything regarding TDKR. Personally I can’t wait til they can go to LA or elsewhere for filming and we can get back to normalcy. Anywho props to Anne Hathaway for handling this in such a classy and funny way to the overreaction of so many. It’s August! We should be grateful that we have gotten any teasers at all, WB could of waited til December before we saw any official photos of Bane or Catwoman or a teaser trailer but they gave us some little tidbits to get us amped for next summer and now everyone’s all mad cuz the teaser doesn’t give away plot points or details, hello! that’s what a teaser trailer is or the photo of Catwoman isn’t what they thought it be cuz it doesn’t give away her entire look, relax it’s August. Thankfully there are still alot of us Batman fans comic book and/or movie fans who will not be phased by these ridiculous comments and overreactions and photo and set leaks who will still support The Dark Knight Rises. I for one have the Catwoman photo as my wallpaper for my PS3 and I look foward to WB releasing more “Official” photos in the upcoming months when the date draws closer.

      The photo is based on filming during what seems to be (at least one of the) the movie’s action climax. I don’t see reason to believe that this is an “early stage” version of the suit. I’m more disappointed with Bane’s look, to be honest.

      But the fact is, Nolan has never disappointed. And not only when it comes to Batman. Less than perfect wardrobe doesn’t kill a movie.

      I believe in Chris Nolan.

        Numerous sources have said it’s the early stage, including the actress who is actually PLAYING the role, yet you still don’t see a reason to believe it?  Why would she lie?  

        I’ve seen it said a few times that this Batman and Bane fighting stuff we’ve seen is the climax of the movie and I really don’t see why people think that.  What they’ve been filming is the Blackgate prison escape and in the Bane storyline, that was the very start, not the climax.  I’m sure the climax will be the knock down, drag out one on one Batman vs Bane showdown which I believe we saw a tiny glimpse of in the teaser.
        And even without knowing the full story, there could be numerous reasons why Catwoman wouldn’t be in full costume for that scene.  The most likely is because she’s driving the Batpod and that head gear has the targeting systems/computer stuff or whatever in it.  Or possibly she was just in a fight where the mask was torn off?  Who knows?  But I’d wager money that Nolan, knowing this scene would be filmed in public, went out of his way to write in a reason for her not to be in full costume just to keep it under wraps.

    Yeah I agree with lethargicj, this big fight scene with Bane vs Batman and Catwoman on the batpod will definitely not be the climax of the film, no way would Nolan shoot such an important scene in the public eye. Hathaway has also pretty much confirmed that the catsuit she has on is an early version, and that it’s no were near complete. I think what exciting and what we have to remember is that every spoiler we’ve seen to date probably accumulates to about 15 minutes minutes of actual film time, theres like 2 and half hours of film that we wont know about until we see it. Trying to second guess Nolan is silly.

      I think the suit will be modified in some details to serve the plot… as the batsuit was. They’ll maybe add some gadgets here and there, but I think the whole thing is pretty much this one showed in the pic. That’s the definitive suit, dude… well, i can live with that! ;)

    Before you say that Nolan is infallible, I have this to bring up: Katie Holmes.

    That  being said, the characters look more fleshed out this time around and I hope Nolan goes out with a bang. Perhaps INCEPTION gave him enough practice for action sequences to do this element of TDKR better. That being said, I still think he is imperfect for hand-to-hand action.     I think Hathaway is describing the capabilities of the suit, and not the visual quality. It does seem like she is under wraps on whether or not she can indicate whether she will sport a catlike appearance or not.  If she doesn’t look the part in the final cut, I am going to be angry.  While none of the live action Batsuits look similar to the comic book version (except Adam West’s), they at least retain some of the distinct  Batman features, such as the ears, cape, and cowl.  I don’t think Catwoman should be any different.

      Yeah Katie Homes was a flop but this is Nolan’s third go at batman now, he must have the winning formula. Batman Begins for example was the best Batman movie to ever come out at the time and then to take it to a completely new level with TDK was genius. TDK was that good It could almost have been an independant film. I imagine TDKR has the same feel as the TDK with more action. I kinda want to see batman bleed a bit, I think Nolan needs to show his vunerability.

      Batman wanted to look bat-like because he feared bats, and wanted criminals to experience that feeling of fear when dealing with him. I think in the film catwoman will probably be referred to as ‘the cat’ or ‘the catwoman’ but she won’t adopt that name because she looks like a cat, it will be because she gets branded as the ‘cat-burgler’ or something. Catwoman and Batman are sort of opposite in that way, Batman’s suit determined his name, whereas Catwomans name will determine the suit.
