Joseph Gordon-Levitt comments on ‘Man of Steel’ cameo rumors (video)

MTV’s Josh Horowitz caught up with Joseph Gordon-Levitt at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah to talk about his upcoming projects. Horowitz couldn’t let the interview end without asking about the recent rumor that Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character from The Dark Knight Rises might be making a cameo in this summer’s Superman movie Man of Steel. Gordon-Levitt explained that he hadn’t heard that particular rumor, but that we shouldn’t believe it. He concluded the interview by saying if there’s something we need to know, he’ll tell us on Twitter. Possible Batman cameo in ‘Man of Steel’? Christopher Nolan won’t deny it…

Earlier this month it was reported that Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character from The Dark Knight Rises would be suiting up as Batman in 2015′s Justice League. The same report also implied that we may see Gordon-Levitt in the cape and cowl even sooner, with a possible Man of Steel cameo next summer. Movieline caught up with Man of Steel producer Christopher Nolan at a recent event and asked if Joseph Gordon-Levitt, or any actor as Batman, would make a cameo in the latest Superman movie. “I can’t talk about that. You know that,” Nolan said cheerily with an impish smile.

If this was just some ridiculous rumor, why wouldn’t Nolan just say “no”? We’ve seen Nolan refute crazy rumors in the past. Back in 2010 it was rumored that a CGI version of Heath Ledger’s Joker would be making a cameo in The Dark Knight Rises. Nolan didn’t act coy when asked about it, and debunked the rumor before it had time to spread any further. In my opinion, Nolan acting coy about a Man of Steel cameo adds fuel to the rumor that Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be the next Batman on film.

Exploring John Blake: The Dark Knight Rises’ Boy Wonder

Christopher Nolan frequently said we would never see Robin in his Batman trilogy, so it came as a huge surprise to everyone when the final few minutes of The Dark Knight Rises introduced us to the visionary director’s take on the iconic DC character. Of course, John Blake was arguably a mash-up of all the Robin’s (Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, and to a much lesser extent, Damian Wayne) and someone far more knowledgeable than myself in Batman-lore could probably point out all of the similarities between them and him. Regardless of which qualities Nolan did or did not take from those mentioned above, John Blake was perhaps one of his best creations yet. A relatable and heroic man, it was hard to have any issues at all with him taking over the mantle of the Bat by the end of the film after Bruce Wayne made the ultimate sacrifice (well, sort of).

Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play Batman in ‘Justice League’? [Update]

Update: Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s reps claim that this report is “entirely false“. Should we believe them? I think Steve Weintraub of Collider summed it up best:

Now, onto the original report…

By now we’ve all seen The Dark Knight Rises and know that Christopher Nolan left the door open by introducing a new Batman… Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character, Robin “John” Blake. Drew McWeeny of HitFix just dropped a bombshell rumor regarding the future of Batman on film. According to McWeeny’s sources, Joseph Gordon-Levitt “absolutely will be appearing in Justice League as the new Batman”. But the story gets much more interesting than that. McWeeny goes on to explain that we may see Gordon-Levitt in the cape and cowl even before Justice League — in next summer’s Superman movie, Man of Steel.

That’s right… Batman may have a cameo in Man of Steel to set up the inevitable Justice League movie that Warner Bros. hopes to release in the summer of 2015. According to Hitfix’s report, Warner Bros. is also looking to bring back at least one more character from Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon, perhaps?

Keep in mind this is just a rumor right now, but HitFix is a credible website with a pretty good track record. Nonetheless, this is by far the biggest rumor regarding Batman’s future on the big screen we’ve heard yet. How do you feel about Joseph Gordon-Levitt suiting up as Batman? Joseph Gordon-Levitt was on the “Late Show with David Letterman” last night to talk about his new movie Looper. Letterman kicked off the interview with some The Dark Knight Rises talk and got Gordon-Levitt to speak about the ending in great detail. While I’d love to see them continue with Gordon-Levitt as Batman, I think it’s clear that Warner Bros. is going to leave Christopher Nolan’s trilogy alone and move onto a Justice League project. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is currently doing a lot of press for his new movie Premium Rush, so he’s been getting a lot of questions about The Dark Knight Rises’ ending. In this new interview with MTV Gordon-Levitt explains that he doesn’t think The Dark Knight Rises was a set-up for any sequels, it was just a perfect ending for Christopher Nolan’s trilogy. I agree with Gordon-Levitt, though Nolan did leave the door wide open if Warner Bros. wanted to bring in a new director to pick up the story. Personally, I’d love to see that happen, I think Gordon-Levitt would be perfect for the role. However, I think we’re much more likely to see Batman in the new Justice League movie that’s currently being worked on… Batman’s future in solo movies is still undetermined.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt issues statement on Colorado shooting at ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ screening, Warner Bros. to donate to victims

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays officer John Blake in The Dark Knight Rises, is the latest cast member to speak out on the horrible shooting that took place in a Colorado movie theater during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises:

My most sincere sympathies go out to the families of the victims in Aurora.

Gordon-Levitt joins Warner Bros., Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, and Anne Hathaway in showing his support to the victims and families who were affected by last Friday’s tragedy.

In related news, The Hollywood Reporter says that Warner Bros. will be making a substantial donation to the victims of the Colorado shooting.
