Update 2: A video of Nolan’s comments has made its way online. Click here to check it out.
Update: This is a little strange…Variety has updated their article and removed all mentions of Batman 3. I was able to copy the quote from when it was up earlier in the day, check it out below.
Variety recently interviewed Christopher Nolan about the box office success of his latest film, Inception. Towards the end of the interview “Batman 3” was brought up, here’s what he had to say:
Nolan confirmed he is currently working on the script for “Batman 3,” which Warned Bros. has announced a July 20, 2012 release date for, though the studio has not yet officially greenlit the pic.
“They haven’t told me they don’t want to do it, so I’m hopeful,” he joked.
That part of the interview seems odd to me, considering Warner Bros. has already officially announced the July 20, 2010 release date. That said, we are due for another official Batman 3 announcement, one that could be coming as early as next month. Stay tuned to Batman-News.com for all the latest.
If you were a little confused by the quote above, check out an explanation from TheScarecrow at the SuperHeroHype forums after the break.
Practically, it means that Nolan’s making Batman 3 but there’s no written documents expressly stating it – meaning that there’s no movie, no official script, no official cast etc. That is, there’s nothing to leak out and also nothing set in stone to announce. Nolan’s just using the flexibility of his ‘producer’ title and you’ll probably find that in a month or two he’ll make an official pitch to WB for Batman 3 with a film that’s near ready to begin shooting.
