Upcoming Comics: December 19th, 2012

Eclipso’s Black Diamond, the Throne of Atlantis, and Joker’s rotting face are on the agenda this week as we read more Death of the Family tie-ins, begin a brand new Catwoman story arc, and set off on an epic adventure with the Justice League that will tie into the terrific series Aquaman.

Here’s a list of all the Batman comics coming out this week, December 19th, graded on a scale of my own anticipation.

None.  –   I’ll get to it…eventually   –   Eh…meh.  –  Bring it.  –  TAKE MY MONEY

CATWOMAN #15

Written by ANN NOCENTI

Art by RAFA SANDOVAL and JORDI TARRAGONA

Cover by TREVOR McCARTHY

32 pg, $2.99 US • RATED T+

Anticipation Level:   None.

So this last issue of this series was bad, but it wasn’t “I want to gouge out my eyes” bad like the 2 issues before it so I gave it a pass. This time around though…It’s about Catwoman trying to steal Eclipso’s black diamond. Eclipso is one of those villains that’s best suited for battles with the Justice League so I don’t know what he or his accessories are doing in a Catwoman comic.  Why can’t we just keep things simple with this series? No stray cats licking people back to life, magic jewelry, or whatever Eclipso is exactly in the New 52. I think he was alien-related in the Justice League Unlimited cartoon and more of a God of Vengeance type being in the previous comics continuity. Either way, it seems like a waste to introduce him to the New 52 for the first time with Catwoman. I hope I’m wrong but…this just doesn’t sound like the kind of Catwoman story I’m interested in.

RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #15

Written by SCOTT LOBDELL

Art by TIMOTHY GREEN II

Cover by GREG CAPULLO

32 pg, $2.99 US • RATED T

Anticipation Level:   Bring it.

If you read issue #15 ( and I highly suggest you at least find out how that issue ended before picking this one up) you know that Jason is in a pretty terrible situation right now. The Joker really screwed him here and I’m excited to see how exactly Jason gets out of this mess. From the sound of things, he’ll have a little help from Tim Drake (I avoid calling him Red Robin…I just can’t stand that name. At all.) so that should be fun as long as none of the other Teen Titans show up too.

NIGHTWING #15

Written by KYLE HIGGINS

Art and cover by EDDY BARROWS and EBER FERREIRA

32 pg, $2.99 US • RATED T

Anticipation Level:   TAKE MY MONEY

Kyle Higgins and Eddy Barrows took 2 months off from this series to make damn sure they got the Death of the Family tie-in right. And with the Joker resurfacing right when Grayson is opening the new Amusement Mile, it’s a safe bet to say that there will be blood.

Update: Suicide Squad #14 and Batgirl #14 will have 2nd printings coming out this week as well. Justice League #15 won’t be out until next week, thanks to RobeJ in the comments for the heads up.
