This week, Death of the Family puts Empire Penguin on the back burner, Batwing deals with dirty cops, and Legends of the Dark Knight bundles 3 short stories into one single comic to give you plenty of bang for your buck!
Here’s a list of all the Batman comics coming out this week, January 9th graded on a scale of my own anticipation.

January 9th
DETECTIVE COMICS #16
Written by JOHN LAYMAN
Art and cover by JASON FABOK
Backup story art by ANDY CLARKE
40 pg, $3.99 US • RATED T
Anticipation Level: Interested
Really? A “Death of the Family” tie-in issue? Did we need this? I’m not sure how they are going to squeeze a Batman-centric comic in with what’s going on in Snyder’ Batman but…hey, Layman and Fabok have been doing a fine job so far so I’m probably worrying over nothing, right? Still, I can’t help but feel like I would much rather stay focused on the Emperor Penguin (dumb name, but fun story) and his rise to power rather than see that pushed to the backup.
BATWING #16
Written by FABIAN NICIEZA
Art by ALLAN JEFFERSON
Cover by SIMON BISLEY
32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T
Anticipation Level: I’d rather not
David refuses one bribe too many, and now the police have issued a hit on him! Sounds interesting and a nice change of pace from the magic and aliens that have been cropping up lately. However, if I don’t find this comic at least deserving of a 7/10 I’m going to drop it from the review rotation.
LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT #4
Written by T.J. FIXMAN, ANDREW DABB, JONATHAN LARSEN
Art by CHRISTOPHER MITTEN, GIORGIO PONTRELLI, TAN ENG HUAT
Cover by JHEREMY RAAPACK
40 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T
Anticipation Level: TAKE MY MONEY
This series has been absolutely terrific so far and this one promises to be a variety pack just like the very first issue. These 40 pages include 3 unique done-in-one stories by different writers and artists including Jonathan Larsen who wrote that terrific Amazo tale from Legends of the Dark Knight #1. The first story is about a new hero who shows up in Gotham and captures the Joker, the second is a movie being filmed in Gotham about the Batman, and the third and final short focuses on Two-Face and I can only hope it’s a good one because Two-Face has had nothing but terrible stories for a couple of years now.
