Get ready for a content explosion to happen around here. Not only is this a bigger comic week than usual, but it’s also the start of the 2nd wave of New 52 graphic novel reviews and I’ll have reviews up for a couple other Batman books as well. Oh, and it’s Break from Batman time too so there will be plenty to read at this website this week. Here’s a list of all the Batman comics coming out this week, January 30th graded on a scale of my own anticipation.
Hell no! – I’d rather not – Ambivalent – Interested – TAKE MY MONEY
Scroll to the bottom of the page and post in the comments section what books you’re most looking forward to this week!
January 30th
BATMAN, INCORPORATED #7
Written by GRANT MORRISON
Art and cover by CHRIS BURNHAM
On sale JANUARY 30 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T
Anticipation Level: TAKE MY MONEY
Expect plenty of action as Batman and Damian take on the Heretic. Things are really getting exciting over in Batman Inc. right now. No more espionage, Batman’s network is going head to head with Talia Al Ghul and the forces of Leviathan. Perhaps another important character will die? We may even find out who the Heretic is under that mask!
BATMAN AND ROBIN ANNUAL #1
Written by PETER J. TOMASI
Art by ARDIAN SYAF and VICENTE CIFUENTES
Cover by MIKE CHOI
On sale JANUARY 30 • 48 pg, FC, $4.99 US • RATED T
Anticipation Level: Ambivalent
The former New 52 Batgirl artists take over Batman & Robin for the series’ first annual. “Robin leads Batman on an unrelenting hunt across the globe for family secrets that promise to change them both forever. If you think you know Bruce Wayne…think again!” I have no idea what that teaser could possibly mean but I’m definitely cautious about this. I have yet to enjoy an Annual issue of anything from the New 52 yet and I hate spending $4.99 for a single issue even if it is 48 pages. Definitely a “wait for the reviews” book.
BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT #16
Written by GREGG HURWITZ
Art and cover by ETHAN VAN SCIVER
On sale JANUARY 30 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T
Anticipation Level: Interested
Finch is out and Ethan Van Sciver is in as a new arc featuring The Mad Hatter begins. I have high expectations for this not only because I like Sciver’s art, but because I really, desperately want a good Mad Hatter story. After White Rabbit, hypnotist Black Mask, the terrible Batman: Through the Looking Glass, a one-and-done issue of this very series that had Hatter using a satellite dish instead of hats, and most recently, a Joker who utilizes a mind control toxin, Mad Hatter needs to stand out more than ever or else be rendered irrelevant. I should have an early review for this one much like I did with Nightwing #15 and #16. Welcome new series artist Ethan Van Sciver!
TEEN TITANS #16
Written by SCOTT LOBDELL
Art and cover by BRETT BOOTH
On sale JANUARY 30 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T
Anticipation Level: I’d rather not
Seeing as how the Teen Titans were in Red Hood & the Outlaws #16 and Red Hood wasn’t, I’m going to be extra hard on this comic. We better be focusing on Tim and Jason only this time and it better be good. Don’t get your hopes up, though.
BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED #12
Written by MISCELLANEOUS WRITERS
Art by MISCELLANEOUS ARTISTS
On sale JANUARY 30 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T
Anticipation Level: Interested
This large book that offers bang for your buck features Lobo’s debut in the Beyond universe and the penultimate chapter of the terrific 10,000 Clowns epic. I’m definitely looking forward to this one.
INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US #1
Written by Tom Taylor
Art by Jheremy Raapack
On sale JANUARY 30 • 40 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T
Anticipation Level: Interested
A comic book based on a yet to be released fighting video game? I’ll admit that I’m only mildly interested in this upcoming game. I already own and love the latest Mortal Kombat reboot and this basically looks like the exact same game but with comic book characters– fun but, not exactly worth full-price. However, there’s a good amount of hype behind this digital-first series and if the story is as good as everyone says then I might be buying the game on day one after all! Each month a new issue of Injustice: Gods Among Us is broken up into 3 or 4 parts and released 1 per week until the final week when it’s all collected in print. I’ll be reviewing the printed version. If you can’t wait until then, you can buy this book over at comixology.
GRAPHIC NOVEL WATCH
Justice League Volume 2 comes out this week, Batwoman Volume 2 has been out for a couple weeks and I’ll finally be getting my copy, and I’ll also be doing those long overdue No Man’s Land and Black Mirror reviews.
