Upcoming Comics: June 19th, 2013

It’s actually a fairly light week. Catwoman and Justice League have been pushed back a week and I don’t typically review Birds of Prey or Batwoman so that leaves only 3 titles up for review– yes, Red Hood and the Outlaws is now part of the review-rotation.

Here are the review comics coming out this week, June 19th, graded on a scale of my own anticipation.

Hell no!  –   I’d rather not   –   Ambivalent  –  Interested  –  TAKE MY MONEY

Upcoming Comics: June 19th

BatmanBatgirl21

BATMAN AND BATGIRL #21

Written by PETER J. TOMASI
Art and cover by PATRICK GLEASON and MICK GRAY
On sale JUNE 19 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

Anticipation Level:   Interested

I really hope this is better than last month’s Jason Todd episode. That was a real missed opportunity. This series is currently going through an arc that deals with Batman working his way through the 5 stages of grief following the death of his son. On Wednesday we’ll see Batgirl help Batman through the bargaining phase, but if last month’s teaser holds true we’ll also get an appearance by Two-Face, the first classic Batman rogue besides Joker to make an appearance in this series. Let the healing begin.

Redhood21
RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #21

Written by JAMES TYNION IV
Art by JULIUS GOPEZ
Cover by AL BARRIONUEVA
On sale JUNE 19 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

Anticipation Level:   I’d rather not

I had hoped this series would really take off after James Tynion started writing it but it’s been consistently weak, plus the way Jason Todd is being handled is atrocious. I’m honestly starting to regret making it a part of the review rotation. In this week’s issue the Outlaws still have a bounty on their heads that’s attracting unwanted attention from every big-time bounty hunter on the planet and Jason… well, Jason just isn’t Jason anymore. He has amnesia due to all the darkness being wiped from his soul.

BatmanBeyond21

BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED #17

Written by ADAM BEECHEN, J.T. KRUL and DEREK FRIDOLFS
Art by NORM BREYFOGLE, HOWARD PORTER, LIVESAY and
BEN CALDWELL
Cover by HOWARD PORTER and LIVESAY
On sale JUNE 19 • 48 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T • DIGITAL FIRST

Anticipation Level:   Interested

The solicitation for this issue says “Don’t miss the epic conclusion of Superman Beyond!” — That can’t be true, can it? I hope that just means the conclusion of this arc and not the entire series. Superman Beyond is one of the highlights of the whole Unlimited series! This issue will also come with a short Batman Beyond chapter dealing more with Undercloud and a Justice League chapter revealing an all new ally to the team.

Graphic Novel Watch!

Teen Titans, Vol. 2: The Culling — This one almost slipped by me because this title is so bad that I had forgotten it even exists.

Batgirl/Robin: Year One — I’ve actually never read either of these so I’m really excited to get this and do a review on it. This is the first time the two works have been printed together in TPB form.
