Upcoming Comics: August 7th, 2013

In case you missed Part 1 of Trinity War or loved it so much that you want even more, that book is being re-released in a Director’s Cut that features the original pencils and full script. As for new stuff, we have yet another Trinity War tie-in, Batman fights the Wrath, Lady Vic makes her first appearance in the New 52, and Calendar Man causes trouble in Legends of the Dark Knight.

Here are the review comics coming out this week, August 7th, graded on a scale of my own anticipation.

TRINITY OF SIN: PHANTOM STRANGER #11

Written by J.M. DeMATTEIS
Art by FERNANDO BLANCO
Cover by GUILLEM MARCH
On sale AUGUST 7 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

Anticipation Level:   Ambivalent

At the time I write this I have only read the first issue of Phantom Stranger and I didn’t really care for it. And while these tie-in issues haven’t really been all that necessary I’m hoping we actually get something of substance as the Phantom Stranger leads Batman, Deadman, and Katana into the afterlife.

DetectiveComics23

DETECTIVE COMICS #23

Written by JOHN LAYMAN
Art and cover by JASON FABOK
Backup story art by ANDY CLARKE
1:25 B&W Variant cover by JASON FABOK
On sale AUGUST 7 • 40 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T
Combo pack edition: $4.99 US

Anticipation Level:   Interested

Last month’s issue was terrific, I thought. And with this issue promising even more Alfred Pennyworth I’m extra excited. It’s Batman vs. The Wrath, an anti-batman figure who has the skills and the gadgets to match the Dark Knight only instead of catching criminals he’s killing cops. Expect another frightening Man-Bat short-story as well!

BATWING23

BATWING #23

Written by JUSTIN GRAY and JIMMY PALMIOTTI
Art by EDUARDO PANSICA and JULIO FERREIRA
Cover by KEN LASHLEY
On sale AUGUST 7 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

Anticipation Level:   Ambivalent

I can hardly remember what happened in the last issue, but this promises to be the first appearance of Lady Vic in the New 52… but wasn’t she a Nightwing villain? If I’m right about that then I kind of wish she had shown up in that hero’s book first.

LegendsTDK11

LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT #11

Written by PAUL JENKINS
Art by OMAR FRANCIA
Cover by GREG LUZNIAK
On sale AUGUST 7 • 40 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T • DIGITAL FIRST

Anticipation Level:   Interested

“What Happened Was…” was written by Paul Jenkins who wrote some of the really awful Batman: The Dark Knight issues along with David Finch. But after reading some of his essays/interviews on the editorial interference at DC I’m willing to give this story more of a chance. From what I understand these digital books have a different set of editors and I’m definitely up for a Calendar Man story.

Graphic Novel Watch!

Batman: Arkham Unhinged, Vol. 2 collects issues #6-10 of this tie-in to the popular video game franchise by Rocksteady Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. However, I can’t say this series of stand-alone comics has been all that great nor has it added much to the video game’s story. In fact, it’s really not a book I ever found myself looking forward to. Why it deserves a hardcover at $22.99 is beyond me.
