Upcoming Comics: November 6th, 2013

Money talks! Despite setting the latest Batman arc at the very beginning of Bruce’s career as a masked vigilante, Snyder’s latest tale will still spawn a slew of tie-in books that will even include titles that don’t star Batman characters! We’re talking Superman, Flash, a Green Lantern, and other well known characters just happening through Gotham at the same time as the blackout. It feels very unnecessary and if it looks like a cash-grab and smells like a cash-grab then it’s probably a cash-grab. I’m on the fence about reviewing the majority of these titles so whether or not I do review them will depend on how busy I am this week and how high the level of interest is among the Batman News community. If you’re looking to buy every tie-in no matter what, Action Comics: Zero Year #25 & Green Arrow: Zero Year #25 come out this week. As you can tell by the list below I have plenty on my plate as it is…

Here are the review comics coming out this week, November 6th, graded on a scale of my own anticipation.

Detective Comics’ Batman: Zero Year tie-in actually stars someone who is germane to Snyder & Capullo’s epic and that’s Jim Gordon. I’m optimistic about seeing a full issue devoted to Jimbo, but seeing as how poorly my favorite mustachioed member of the G.C.P.D. has been handled in the New 52 so far, I’m remaining only cautiously optimistic.

Will we finally see some fallout over what the Crime Syndicate did to Nightwing? What’s Lex Luthor’s plan? What happened to the Justice League? Who will win in the smack-down between Ultraman & Black Adam? The potential for cool s*** is really high so let’s hope Forever Evil #3 rises to the occasion.

BatmanSuperman5

BATMAN/SUPERMAN #5

Written by GREG PAK
Art and cover by BRETT BOOTH and NORM RAPMUND
1:25 Variant cover by JON BOGDANOVE

Combo pack edition: $4.99 US

Anticipation Level:   Interested

It’s a brand new arc and this one will feature Superman trying to save Batman from the new Toymaster’s sinister plot. I’m a big fan of Brett Booth’s artwork and it should be interesting seeing the modern Batman and Superman team up after the previous story’s flashback to their far less friendly days.

Harley-Quinn-0

HARLEY QUINN #0

Written by AMANDA CONNER and JIMMY PALMIOTTI
Art by DARWYN COOKE, SAM KIETH, TONY S. DANIEL, PAUL POPE, WALTER SIMONSON, ART BALTAZAR and others
Cover by AMANDA CONNER
1:25 Variant cover by STEPHANE ROUX
“WE CAN BE HEROES” Blank variant cover also available
On sale NOVEMBER 6 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

Anticipation Level:   TAKE MY MONEY

I’m in no way a die-hard Harley Quinn fan, nor do I think we really needed another fringe-bat-title, but I’m intrigued by the idea of Harley’s first New 52 solo book featuring so many stellar artists. The potential for Deadpool/Ambush-Bug-esque fourth wall breaking has me nervous, but here’s hoping this will make for a fun read.

BatmanBlackWhite3

BATMAN BLACK AND WHITE #3

Written by LEE BERMEJO, RIAN HUGHES, DAMION SCOTT, PAUL DINI and MARV WOLFMAN
Art by LEE BERMEJO, RIAN HUGHES, DAMION SCOTT, STEPHANE ROUX and RICCARDO BURCHIELLI
Cover by OLLY MOSS
On sale NOVEMBER 6 • 48 pg, B&W, 3 of 6, $4.99 US • RATED T

Anticipation Level:   TAKE MY MONEY

No, I didn’t find the last issue quite as stunning as the first, but it was still one of the best comics I read last month by far. In my opinion, any issue of Batman Black and White is worth picking up and this one featuring Batman: The Animated Series‘ Paul Dini, Batman: Noel‘s Lee Bermejo, and a band of other incredibly talented writers and artists shouldn’t be missed. Check out Batman News’ exclusive preview of this issue here.

ScoobyDoo1

SCOOBY-DOO TEAM-UP #1

Written by SHOLLY FISCH
Art and cover by DARIO BRIZUELA
On sale NOVEMBER 6 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED E

Anticipation Level:   Interested

Yes, seriously. I kept seeing this advertise in all of the other comics I’ve been reviewing and a Batman/Scooby-Doo team up sounds both charming and a nice way to shake-up the usual review rotation. This isn’t going to become a regular thing by any means, but I want to give this cartoony book a try. Scooby and the gang are out to stop a crook pretending to be a bat-creature, but these folks are about to encounter the real thing when Gotham fiend The Man-Bat comes to town!

Batwing25

BATWING #25

Written by JUSTIN GRAY and JIMMY PALMIOTTI
Art by EDUARDO PANSICA and JULIO FERREIRA
Cover by AMANDA CONNER
On sale NOVEMBER 6 • 40 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T

Anticipation Level:   Interested

I don’t see this so much as a Zero Year tie-in as I do an opportunity to flesh out the character of Luke Fox, the new Batwing. He hasn’t been around for too long and we really don’t know much about him. Hopefully some heroics from his younger days (I guess he’d be in high school?) will be character building. This issue will show Luke trying to stop a classmate from causing too much havoc during the Gotham blackout.

Graphic Novel Watch!
