Fashionista wrote a great piece on how superhero costumes are made, and spoke with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice costume designer Michael Wilkinson to learn more about Ben Affleck’s Batman costume.
Wilkinson said that they can suit Henry Cavill up as Superman in 15 minutes, but getting Ben Affleck in his Batsuit takes closer to 25 — and that’s with help. “It does involve multiple costumers,” Wilkinson says. “It’s not the sort of thing that I could just sit in Ben’s trailer and he gets into it himself. It’s a six-handed operation.”
When the photos of Ben Affleck as Batman were released, some fans were concerned that he’d have trouble turning his head like Michael Keaton and even Christian Bale in Batman Begins, due to the design of the cowl. That won’t be a problem for Affleck however, according to Wilkinson.
“That’s actually one of the first things that Snyder mentioned to me in one of our initial meetings,” Wilkinson says. “It’s a very important thing to Zack that the Batsuit would be comfortable and very flexible, but then would be able to perform in a very natural and forceful way. So a lot of incredible engineering went into the development of the new black cowl.”
That’s great to hear! And we won’t have to wait long to see Ben Affleck’s Batman in action. The first Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer will be released next month, in mid-May.
