6. How Does Joker Fit In?

We still don’t know exactly what role the Joker plays in the Suicide Squad and if he’s the big bad or not, but we see a lot more of his character in this trailer. We see him in various outfits, including a tux (which is reminiscent of a famous comic book cover) and in various scenes. He seems to mostly be causing havoc with machine guns and his goons shooting up various places. We see him in the middle of a pile of knives and weapons and piano keys laughing maniacally. We also see him dipping Harley into a vat of chemicals at one point. From the Comic-Con trailer, we know that he was a prisoner at Arkham and Harleen Quinzel was his psychiatrist. He breaks out of the prison, but not before torturing and tattooing her. Because of this and multiple other scenes where he’s shown with Harley Quinn, I have to wonder what the time span is on the movie. Harley is seen with the Joker, but she’s also seen in a lot of scenes with the Suicide Squad. We do know that there is another threat in the form of demons and subway swamp things, but only time will tell how he fits in.

7. Scott Eastwood’s Character Still a Mystery

As soon as Scott Eastwood was announced as an addition to the Suicide Squad cast, the rumors started. The most popular one, and which could actually prove to be true, is that he is playing the mercenary Deathstroke AKA Slade Wilson.  He would be competing against a very solid TV incarnation of the character on the CW show, Arrow, where the character was played to great effect by Manu Bennett. Another rumor was that he was playing Steve Trevor, Wonder Woman’s love interest and would be introduced here before the solo movie. We now know that Chris Pine is playing Steve Trevor in the WW movie and that it’s set in WWI and thus effectively puts this one to bed. The other option is that he’s just a soldier on the team that is led by Rick Flag. A shot of Eastwood in military uniform showing “GQ” on his sleeve where a last name should be is not helping. So, for the time being, his character is still a mystery.

8. Harley Quinn Will Steal the Show

We only got a small taste of Harley from the SDCC trailer, but she was front and center in the new trailer. Whether sipping tea and reading a Harlequinn (see what they did there?) novel in prison, joking about what the voices in her head are actually saying or smashing a window to steal an expensive purse, Margot Robbie’s take on Harley Quinn looks to be spot on to the character’s depiction in the Batman animated series and then later the comic books- a raving lunatic. A lot of the talk has been about Jared Leto’s new Joker, but really we’ll be watching Harley to see what she does. Ultimately, it’s a win-win as there look to be a lot of scenes between Harley and the Joker and I’ll be interested to see how this “love story” plays out.

9. Jim Parrack is Jonny Frost

We pretty much knew that Jim Parrick would be playing Joker henchman Jonny Frost since last April, when it was revealed by Jeff Sneider on his Meet the Movie Press podcast and then later confirmed by another actress in the film (who posted about it on her Instagram and then later deleted it). We saw a brief shot of him in the Comic-Con trailer leading the Joker down a hallway, but the new trailer puts the definitive nail in the coffin with this brief moment where we see Parrick shooting a rotary cannon with a jacket on sporting a fancy insignia with the letters “J” and “F” on it as well as “Frost” on the nameplate above it. It doesn’t get much more definitive than that. We can tell you that Frost was a henchman/chauffeur in the 2008 graphic novel “Joker” and we can also speculate that a storyline that happens in the graphic novel will happen in the Suicide Squad movie. In the novel, Frost brings Joker, Killer Croc and Harley to the Grin and Bare It strip club, formerly owned by the Joker. The Joker wants to take back his club, his reputation, his town and launches a bloody path of revenge, starting with burning down the club. Now, we saw shots of Harley on a stripper pole in a club in both trailers and especially in the new trailer, we see her making gunshot motions. Perhaps the Joker is taking his club back with the help of Harley? Frost could be a bigger piece of the puzzle than we think and it could also provide us with the motivation that the Joker has after getting out of jail.

10. Killer Croc Eats People

It looks like the version of Killer Croc we’ll be getting is going to be close to the version from this same graphic novel “Joker”. In it, he is portrayed as a large, muscular black man with a skin condition. Ayer cast Adewale AkinnuoyeAgbaje in the role of Killer Croc. In the graphic novel, he later becomes a high-ranking member of Joker’s gang and is most often depicted as a nemesis of Batman, fighting him on many occasions, including in the Batman: Arkham series of games. In “Joker” it is hinted at that he eats human flesh, but in this new trailer they outright state it. Could we see him end up with the Joker crew instead of the Suicide Squad by the end of the movie? Only time will tell.
