New Batman ’66 crossover coming this June

Finally.

In a pleasant birthday surprise*, DC Comics has released details for the upcoming miniseries Batman ’66 Meets Steed and Mrs. Peel.  The digital-first series, releasing in June, was announced at Comic-Con last year without any follow-up, but details were finally released this morning:

Holy 1960s-TV crossover! Capitalizing on the past success of the Green Hornet and The Man From U.N.C.L.E crossovers, DC Comics is partnering with BOOM! Studios to pair together two of the hippest shows from the ’60s in the new Digital First comic book miniseries BATMAN ’66 MEETS STEED AND MRS. PEEL.

Launching June 8th as a 12-chapter, bi-weekly series based on the classic 1960s Batman TV show starring Adam West and Burt Ward, the comic will feature Batman and Robin coming face-to-face for the first time with the other (and English) dynamic duo John Steed and Mrs. Peel – characters from the hit ’60s British TV series The Avengers starring Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg.

Critically acclaimed British comic book writer Ian Edginton (X-Force, JUSTICE LEAGUE) has been tapped to pen the series, joined by artist Matthew Dow Smith (JUSTICE LEAGUE: GODS & MONSTERS – BATMAN). Cover artists include BATMAN ’66 veteran Michael Allred and fan-favorite artist Cat Staggs, who contributes a variant cover for issue #1.

I’m sure we’re aware of the obvious reason this isn’t titled Batman ’66 Meets the Avengers, but I kind of like the way this title sounds.  Great timing, too, as the U.N.C.L.E. crossover is almost over and it seemed like we’d be without ’66 for a while.  Now it’s time to track down some old The Avengers episodes for research…
