Free Comic Book Day is Saturday, May 7th

Just a friendly reminder: the annual Free Comic Book Day is upon us this Saturday, May 7th.

Beginning in 2002, the first Saturday of May has been recognized as a day where different publishers release free materials to find new readers, provide a sampling of their product, and most importantly to encourage visiting a local comic book shop.  This year also marks the 15th anniversary of Free Comic Book Day, so that’s a great milestone to be celebrated in itself.

This year, dozens of books are being offered from several publishers, including DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, and Bongo.  There’s something for everybody, as usual, but I think we can all agree that anything featuring the Tick is the clear winner.

The offerings from DC are disappointingly light, with a re-release of Suicide Squad #1 and a look at the all-ages DC Super Hero Girls #1 being the only titles from the publisher.  With Rebirth so close, it’s a little strange that there isn’t a tie-in like last year’s Divergence, but then they may be playing the event close to the chest so it’s understandable.  And hey, free comics is free comics; I’m not one to complain.

It’s a great day for comic fans of all ages, so grab a few friends, throw on your favorite Batman shirt, and head to a location near you to celebrate and keep the brick and mortar business alive.
