‘Captain America: Civil War’ beats ‘Batman v Superman’ in opening weekend, but not as badly as predicted

Captain America: Civil War got off to a slow start, losing to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in both Thursday and Friday showings. But overall, it made up for it and ended up beating Zack Snyder’s latest with $179.1 million in its first opening weekend. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice broke March records with a $166.1 million first weekend. Captain America: Civil War was estimated to open with over $200 million this weekend, but it fell short.

Once upon a time Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was supposed to open this weekend too. Warner Bros. set the date when Captain America: Civil War was just an “untitled Marvel movie”. But when they found out they’d be competing again Captain America and Iron Man, they made the wise choice to move Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice up to March. This allowed both movies to have big opening weekends, something that might not have been possible if both opened on the same day.
