Report: Willem Dafoe is playing an Aquaman character in ‘Justice League’

The Florida Project

Update: This rumor was true! Willem Dafoe is playing Aquaman ally Volko in Justice League.

Last month Willem Dafoe joined the cast of Justice League: Part One, but all we know about his role is that he’s playing a good guy. Birth.Movies.Death doesn’t know exactly who he’s playing, but says that he’ll be an Atlantean. That means he’ll probably be joining the Jason Momoa, King of Atlantis, in the Aquaman movie as well.

And speaking of Aquaman, a criticism of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was that you could clearly tell that Jason Momoa was holding his breath under water during his cameo. Birth.Movies.Death has details on how Zack Snyder will film underwater scenes in Justice League.

My sources tell me that rather than shoot in a water tank this time Zack Snyder has set up an elaborate rig on a green screen stage – it’s a two armed rig, with Momoa clutched in one arm while the camera is clutched in the other. They two arms are preprogrammed to move in sync so that Momoa can do all kinds of maneuvers while the camera moves around him. I’m assuming there’s a similar rig for more elaborate flying stuff. Momoa’s hair will be CGIed into a flowy, underwater look.

Birth.Movies.Death also says that while Justice League will be shot on physical sets, Zack Snyder will shoot against green screens to add in backgrounds via CGI, similarly to what he did in 300.

If this rumor is true, which Atlantean do you think Willem Dafoe should play? Let me know in the comments below.
