‘Independence Day’ director Roland Emmerich says ‘Man of Steel’ imitated his work

1996’s Independence Day was destroying cities before it was cool. That’s why director Roland Emmerich feels that Marvel and DC are ripping off his work. In fact, he was warned by legendary director Steven Spielberg that this would happen.

In an interview with Loaded, Emmerich calls out a scene from Man of Steel as a specific example.

“I felt that when I saw some of these Marvel movies or DC movies from Warners. I felt, ‘oh my God that looks familiar to me’. Why is Superman bashing so many buildings?” Emmerich said when discussing the similarities between superhero movies and his own.

“I was actually warned already by Steven Spielberg that this will happen. He said Independence Day will be the most imitated film of the next 20 years – and he was right. Smart man.”

Indepedence Day is a classic, but the sequel Independence Day: Resurgence (which is out this weekend) is getting slammed by critics and fans. Note to Marvel and DC… don’t copy that one!
