Last weekend Suicide Squad crossed the $700 million mark, and this weekend it continued to dominate at the box office!
To date, David Ayer’s movie about bad guys has made about $718 million world wide. That is a huge number for a brand new superhero movie franchise, especially one that got banned in China, the second biggest movie market. It’s also huge number for a movie that got absolutely destroyed by critics.
At $718 million world wide, Suicide Squad has also passed two huge movies based on Marvel characters. Marvel Studios’ Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which was hot off billion dollar movies like The Avengers and Iron Man 3 and received rave reviews, made $714 million. And that’s with $115 million from China!
Spider-Man is arguably Marvel’s most popular superhero, and Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 made $708 million (with the help of China) in 2014.
There’s been a lot of negatively surrounding Suicide Squad in the mainstream press, but the facts are out there now. It’s extremely interesting and surprising to me that a brand new superhero franchise that got critically destroyed just beat two of the biggest superhero franchises in the world this weekend!
