James Wan comments on Amber Heard as Mera, teases ‘Aquaman’ tone some more

ET caught up with Aquaman director James Wan last night at the Australians in Film Awards Gala. He called the newly released image of Amber Heard as Mera “super cool” and then went on to describe the dynamic between her and Jason Momoa.

“I think Amber and Jason Momoa, in their moments in Justice League, (are) going to give the rest of the world a flavor of what their own standalone movie could be,” Wan explained. “And that is just scratching the surface of what I plan to do.”

Wan was then asked to describe the tone of Aquaman, and he went into more detail than when he previously answered that same question.

“I kind of don’t want to give too much away but know this: The spirit that I’m going for is like a classic sort of swashbuckling action adventure, sort of high seas adventure story,” Wan said. “It’s ultimately a quest story in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Romancing the Stone.”

If you’re like me and haven’t heard the term “swashbuckling” before, he’s the defintion of “swashbuckle”:

engage in daring and romantic adventures with ostentatious bravado or flamboyance.
