This Week in Comics: Someone killed the Waynes again…

How many times do these poor people have to die?

But seriously, charges of Martha-death-fixation aside, Trinity #3 was amazing stuff. If you aren’t reading this book, you should start. I thought Suicide Squad was a really fun mess, Justice League was a really predictable mess, and Batman was just disappointingly messy. Tom King is the best writer in this business—I really believe that, and hope that there’s some worthwhile reveal on the other side of whatever it is we’re getting right now. But at the moment, I’m just sad that I don’t even feel like rereading a book starring Batman.

Beyond the fair city, Percy, Piekos, and Ferreyra had a nice wrap-up to their two-part Green Arrow arc, Humphries (and Robson!!!) churned out another solid chapter of “The Phantom Lantern,” and Superman was, well, super. Also, if you haven’t checked out Matt Kindt and David Rubín’s Ether, the first issue came out this week. See if you can track a copy down (check out my review if you need convincing).

In my feverish attempt to come up with a justifiable explanation for all these shenanigans, it never occurred to me to take them at face value.  That what we are being given isn’t some switcheroo, but the actual story.  As appalling as that sounds, I’m unfortunately starting to think it might be the truth…

Collecting the entire six issue series, Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Vol. 1 offers the chance to return to one of the surprise miniseries of recent years.  It was fun during its run, but does it hold up?  Let’s find out, dudes and dudettes.

…if any big-headed, grieving hacker with a Walmart laptop and no experience interfacing with power rings can penetrate the greatest achievement of the Guardians of the Universe, then the ring is looking a lot less worthy of our trust.

Superman and Nightwing are two of the most optimistic characters in comics, and a duo that have a long, interesting history between them.  Any meeting between the two is at least worth paying attention to, and while this issue never quite achieves greatness, it’s comforting in how optimistic it is.

 Suicide Squad #6

Probably more so than any other book, Suicide Squad reads like a television series. Each issue carries nicely into the next, and while the main plot serves as the hook, it’s the characters, their stories, and the consequences of their actions that progress the narrative.

There will come a day, if it hasn’t arrived already, where Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason’s names will be listed among the greatest comic book collaborative teams…They get these characters, and they know how to tell incredibly entertaining stories.

Now this is the type of silliness I can get behind. Seeing [Trigon] try to be cool and hip with the younger crowd is just ridiculous. Of course he owns a timeshare.

…as much as I love celebrating the gorgeous artwork…Trinity #3, for me, marks Manapul’s true arrival as a writer…After seeing a similar transition wreak havoc on Justice League, I was very concerned about what we would get this month; but, if anything, this is the best writing on Trinity yet, and there is no disconnect between Manapul and the rest of the team.
