This Week in Comics: Bane is still not wearing any pants

“I Am Suicide” just delivered its fourth installment, and Bane still hasn’t put on any clothes. While TK assures me on Twitter that Bane is a fastidious sort, I can’t help but be concerned about the cleanliness of all those skulls.

Jokes aside, Batman #12 doubled down on the controversy. And speaking of Double Down, he showed up with a whole gaggle of villains in Justice League #10, a modest improvement for the troubled series. Nightwing returned to Blüdhaven, Harley showed up in Oz and other Elseworlds, and Lois Lane got to use a souvenir from her recent trip to Bruce’s lunar Batcave. What did you think of this week’s stories?

A striking study in both the weight and thrill of being the Batman, this collection may be the strongest segment of work produced by this revered team of creators, and it’s one heck of a good time, to boot.

Batman #12

The main selling point to this issue is Mikel Janín’s art. Other than that, I had a really hard time finding additional material that was worth the price of admission. King is just including so many face-palm-inducing moments, I just don’t know what to do anymore.

I love these slice-of-life/every day adventures in comics, so this is just my cup of tea for a cold winter day. Add in some outstanding (and fun) dream sequences, and the promise of a visit from the Joker, and I’m all in!

Injustice: Ground Zero #1

Injustice: Ground Zero doesn’t come out of the gate with guns a blazing, but it’s still a great read with a nice balance of solid storytelling and pleasing artwork. As a whole package it’s worthy of the Injustice name.

Whether or not you consider this an improvement will depend a lot on your particular sensibilities, and what you expect from this title; but for my money, a reclamation of this sort of crazy comics goofiness is exactly what Hitch needed to wash the stink off of DC’s flagship.

I reached out to Pat this week to see if he could walk us through one of his latest releases: the main story in Suicide Squad #7. He was happy to oblige, and I’m happy to share this inside look at “Going Sane Part Three: Beat on the Brat.”

Nightwing #10

Tim Seeley has had a pretty deft hand with Nightwing already, and this just further proves he knows how to write the character. There are enough new elements that it feels fresh, yet the story never comes off like an info dump.
