The LA Times published a piece this week about IMAX cameras in Hollywood. As you probably know, one of the biggest IMAX fans is the Dark Knight Trilogy director Christopher Nolan.
IMAX cameras are expensive and the lenses can be difficult to come by. Nolan has his own personal collection of lenses, and actually let director Zack Snyder use them for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Here’s an excerpt from the LA Times piece:
Imax cameras can present unique challenges for directors. Particular lenses are difficult to come by, and directors have gone to extremes to procure them, sometimes retrofitting existing parts. Nolan has been known to mail lenses from his personal collection to fellow directors to use on movies including “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
Nolan and Snyder have had a working relationship since Man of Steel, where producer Nolan actually hired Snyder to direct the movie. Nolan served as an executive producer on Batman v Superman, in an advisory role, and it looks like having him on board came in handy when it came to the IMAX scenes!
