First Look: John Romita, Jr. and Dan Abnett’s The Silencer #1

The new age of heroes is here as DC prepares to roll out brand new titles over the next few months.  With creator talent featuring the likes of Scott Snyder, Steve Orlando, Jim Lee, Andy Kubert, and many, many more, the appropriately branded New Age of DC Heroes (formerly known as Dark Matter) will see titles featuring new and familiar faces.  There’s Kubert and Snyder’s New Challengers, for one, seeing a new group of Challengers of the Unknown inhabiting Challengers Mountain.  Then there’s Tony S. Daniel and Robert Venditti’s Damage, featuring a giant monster of a man that sadly does not have a rad haircut and cool “hazard symbol” t-shirt.  Oh yeah, there’s also The Terrifics from Ivan Reis, Doc Shaner, and Jeff Lemire, a Fantastic Four-esque team that has both Metamorpho and Plastic Man.  Give me that one now and forever.

No line would be complete without at least one tie to Gotham, though, as John Romita, Jr. and Dan Abnett team up to bring us The Silencer.

Per DC:

She’s one of the DC Universe’s deadliest assassins…and you’ve never heard of her. Super-strong, highly trained, armed with devastating and stealthy metahuman abilities, the Silencer is virtually invincible. Or at least she was. After decades as Leviathan’s chief assassin, Honor Guest put in her time and managed to get out with her skin intact. Now she lives a normal life with a normal family in a normal house on a normal street. But the past has come back to haunt her in the form of her old employer and a deadly new mission…and Talia Al Ghul won’t take no for an answer.

Ties to Leviathan?  Are we diving back into Batman, Inc. here?  Does that mean the International Club of Heroes can’t be far behind?!

Okay, maybe that’s unlikely, but that’s an interesting premise regardless.  Romita’s a legend in the industry, and he’s had some pretty great success with street-level characters, and Abnett has been killing it on Aquaman, so this is a team I’m excited to see more from.  Check out the sneak preview of the first issue here, and be sure to pick it up when it hits comic shops and other retailers on January 31, 2018.
