DC Comics just announced that John Ridley, Oscar-winning screenwriter of 12 Years a Slave and writer of Vertigo’s The American Way and its sequel Those Above and Those Below, will write a new prestige format series this winter. Titled The Other History of the DC Universe, the series will shine a spotlight on beloved characters such as Renee Montoya, John Stewart, Vixen, and Katana, looking into their individual motives for being heroes.
From Ridley himself:
I could not be more excited by the opportunity to excavate the canon of the DC Universe through a vast array of characters who’ve earned their seat at the table. I’m very impressed with DC’s commitment to making their history as reverent and urgent as it is engaging and entertaining for all its many fans.
I’m also fond of the mission statement for the series: The Other History of The DC Universe isn’t about saving the world, it’s about having the strength to simply be who you are.
Ridley’s The American Way: Those Above and Those Below will come to a close in the next few months, with The Other History of the DC Universe premiering sometime later this year. More news as we hear it here at Batman News.
