5,500+ angry DC fans rally to sabotage Black Panther’s Rotten Tomatoes audience score (update)

Marvel’s latest movie, Black Panther, is getting a lot of buzz this week. The social media reactions from critics have been overwhelming positive and Black Panther just beat Batman v Superman’s record for most advanced ticket sales. All this positive news is rubbing some DC fans the wrong way.

More than 5,500 angry DC fans are rallying together on Facebook to sabotage Black Panther with an event titled “Give Black Panther a Rotten Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes”. Rotten Tomatoes lets anyone contribute to its audience scores, with no way of verifying that they’ve actually seen the movie, which is why you should rarely pay attention to them. That is separate from the official Rotten Tomatoes score, which only verified critics can contribute to.

“I feel that it’s time to strike back at all those under Disney and bring down the house of mouse’s actions for paying off the critics that hurt DC Comics on film,” the event organizer wrote. The official social media hashtags for this event are #DCOverMarvel, #BringDownDisney, and #FuckMarvelStudios.

As of this posting, 3,700 fans say they’re “going” to this event and another 1,800 say that they’re interested. Will you be participating? Or do you think this is childish behavior that makes all DC fans look bad? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Update: The Facebook event has been removed and Rotten Tomatoes has provided the following statement to The Wrap:

“We at Rotten Tomatoes are proud to have become a platform for passionate fans to debate and discuss entertainment and we take that responsibility seriously. While we respect our fans’ diverse opinions, we do not condone hate speech. Our team of security, network and social experts continue to closely monitor our platforms and any users who engage in such activities will be blocked from our site and their comments removed as quickly as possible.”
