Variety reports that Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to star in The Joker origin movie that Warner Bros. is working on. This would be a standalone movie under a new brand and not related to the current DC Extended Universe where Jared Leto plays The Joker.
Variety says that Phoenix met with The Joker director/writer Todd Phillips and got a verbal confirmation that he wants the role. Now he’ll just need to be approved by Warner Bros. and an official deal will have to be made.
Leonardo DiCaprio was reportedly Warner Bros. first choice for the role, but that didn’t pan out.
Phoenix has flirted with superhero roles in the past. He turned down Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman and the lead role in Marvel’s Doctor Strange. What do you think about him playing The Joker? Let me know in the comments below!
