‘Aquaman’ will feature a massive sea dragon instead of the seahorse he’s usually mocked for

Part of the reason why Zack Snyder cast Jason Momoa as Aquaman is because he wanted to make him cool. Aquaman is a character that’s typically mocked in pop culture, and with the Aquaman movie they’re additional taking steps to change that.

Take for example concept art of a sea dragon from the movie, above. According to Entertainment Weekly, the sea dragons are ridden by the people of Xebel — one of the seven underwater kingdoms of Atlantis, their leader is King Nereus (Dolph Lundgren) and Mera (Amber Heard) is one of their warriors.

“The idea was to turn on its head the idea of Aquaman riding a seahorse, take something for which he was mocked and turn it into something terrifying and impressive,” producer Peter Safran told EW. “He’s a Xebellian creature but I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw Arthur (Jason Momoa) on one at some point…”

Perhaps we’ll get to see that this Saturday, when the first Aquaman trailer officially debuts at San Diego Comic-Con.
