The Oscars are adding a “Best Popular Movie” category for superheroes and blockbusters

Ratings for the Oscars this year were at an all-time low, and they are making some changes to try and fix that for next year. The big one as it pertains to Batman News readers? They’re adding a new category for “outstanding achievement in popular film”.

You might as well just call this the superhero movie award. DC, Marvel, and Star Wars movies that have been ignored in the past when it comes to the “Best Picture” nominations will almost certainly be nominated now for “Best Popular Movie”. A movie like Wonder Woman, which received zero nominations this past year, is a perfect example.

Criteria for what makes a movie eligible for the new “Best Popular Movie” Oscar is still being worked on and will be announced at a later date, but I’d imagine that the box office results will come into play.

There are multiple ways to look at this news. On the one hand, superhero movies will no longer be ignored… but at the same time, it will probably be even harder for a movie to break out of this new category and be nominated for something like “Best Picture”. A single movie will be eligible for both categories.
