Yesterday, Mary Elizabeth Winstead was cast as Huntress in Birds of Prey, and today she spoke about it for the first time during an interview with BUILD Series.
Winstead confirmed the casting news, and described Birds of Prey as a “spin-off of Suicide Squad”. She explained that she’s never been a part of a big superhero movie as massive as this before, especially with so many female leads, and is excited for it. You can check out the Birds of Prey talk in the video above around the 17:08 mark.
In a separate interview with The Wrap, Winstead talked about the training that she’ll be starting soon for the role.
“I’m going to start training, and I’ll be learning how to shoot a bow and arrow, too — which is new for me,” Winstead said.
“I can’t say that I was a huge comic book reader,” Winstead added. “But when I met with Cathy Yan, who’s directing the film, and learned kind of the back story of the character, I was really interested,” added the actress. “It’s a really strong, kind of emotional place to start from for a superhero character. I won’t go into too much detail now, but I think it’s interesting and an opportunity to do something cool with this kind of character,” she said.
Birds of Prey starts shooting early next year. It will be released on February 7, 2020.
