James Gunn to write, possibly direct ‘Suicide Squad 2’ for DC

Last summer, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was fired after old tweets he made about pedophilia and rape resurfaced. At the time, it was reported that Warner Bros. was interested in hiring him, and it turns out that report was true.

According to The Wrap, James Gunn is currently in talks to write and direct Suicide Squad 2 for Warner Bros. and DC. The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor was previously attached to Suicide Squad 2 as the director and co-writer, but it seems like Warner Bros. now wants to go in a different direction with the project.

Gavin O’Connor’s script was a direct sequel to the first Suicide Squad, but The Hollywood Reporter says that Gunn’s version will not be a sequel. Instead, it will be a “brand new take on the DC property.”

According to Variety reporter Justin Kroll, O’Connor’s Suicide Squad 2 story was very similar to the one in Birds of Prey, which starts shooting in January. O’Connor was frustrated by that, and now we know why Warner Bros. is deciding to go with a fresh story from James Gunn.

Update: Warner Bros. confirmed to Polygon that Gunn has signed on to write Suicide Squad 2, but wouldn’t comment on if he’d be directing as well.
