Birds of Prey is building momentum leading into the start of production in January. Part of that excitement revolved around screenwriter Christina Hodson who seems to be everywhere at the moment. Speaking in a profile with The Los Angeles Times in the lead up to her film Bumblebee, the topic of the upcoming DCEU film came up, and why Hodson is so excited to write about Harley.
“I just fell in love with Harley. She makes me laugh, but she also makes me cry…. She’s got such emotional depth that is completely contrasted by this light, superficial, fun exterior,” said Hodson. “Even in the comics when she is at her best, she’s doing something bad — and when she’s at her worst she’s doing something good. And that makes her so interesting and so much more real, because that’s what people are like in real life. Very few people are just purely heroic or purely villainous, and she is this wonderful balance of everything,” she added.
Hodson also had nothing but praise to heap on Margot Robbie who is not only returning to the role of Harley, but is also serving as a producer on the film. “This, I can say: [Robbie] is an amazing producer. She’s so dedicated, cares so much, she is in it and works so hard — looks through every choice, reads through every draft, and has super-smart notes,” Hodson said. “I am all about finding good people you believe in as human beings as well as being good creative partners and producers, because it’s an investment — writing these movies takes it out of you.” She also went to express her excitement about the director, saying “I’m also just excited that [director Cathy Yan] is a woman and she’s Asian. That’s a big deal.”
Birds of Prey is quickly filling up with a lot of talent. Besides Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, we’ll also be seeing Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the Huntress and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary. Rosie Perez will be playing Renee Montoya, and it looks as though Orphan is joining the film as well, but no word yet on an actress for that role. And most recently, Ewan McGregor joined the cast as Gotham City villain Black Mask.
As we said, this is going ot be one busy movie!
Birds of Prey hits theaters on Feb. 7, 2020.
