J.K. Simmons has spoken about his status as Commissioner Gordon and it at least gives us a bit of hope we may see him standing next to the Bat-Signal once again.
Out promoting his appearance in The Front Runner, Simmons sat down with Collider for an interview. During the conversation, the topic of Commissioner Gordon inevitably arose.
Q: When we spoke for the first season of your Starz series Counterpart, you said that you weren’t really sure about what would happen with Commissioner Gordon in the DCEU, but that you were hoping to return to the role and get to explore him deeper. Since then, are you aware of any further movement on that?
SIMMONS: Nothing has changed. There are conversations going on, that I’m not going to make public. As far as I know, there’s no opportunity, in the immediate future, for me to do more Commissioner Gordon, but I continue to be optimistic that it will happen again.
With the current slate of films, the only one we could possibly think he might appear in even briefly would be Birds of Prey. Even if he makes an offhand comment while at a crime scene of ‘the Bat’ not being available, it would be a quick way to see Gordon again as well as explain why Batman isn’t in the story.
Other than that, it would more than likely be the long-gestating Matt Reeves film before we would need to call on the services of Simmons again. And even then, if this is an earlier story of Batman as some rumors suggest, then he would probably be recast.
We’ll keep our fingers crossed we get to see Simmons in the trenchcoat again some day.
