James Wan Once Dreamed of Directing a Batman Horror Film

Warner Bros.

Aquaman director James Wan, like many of his peers, once dreamed of making a Batman movie. Before taking on Arthur Curry, Wan hoped he could take The Dark Knight to some scary places. That makes a lot of sense if you’ve been following Wan’s career.

“In the past like most people I loved the idea of directing Batman, but a horror version of Batman,” Wan tells Heroic Hollywood. “That would be a potential fantasy of mine, but I feel like he’s been done quite a fair bit. But, I do love the idea of doing an outright scary Batman. I feel like that’d be really cool.”

James Wan is busy right now and Matt Reeves has control of The Batman, but Wan’s fantasy could eventually become a reality. The Batman mythos has its share of horror stories, so there would be plenty of comic book inspirations from which Wan could choose.

Batman is going to be hanging around movie theaters for a long time. We have already seen multiple cinematic iterations and there will be several more. As Warner Bros. tries to keep the franchise fresh for decades to come, the studio may one day turn to the horror genre.
