Aquaman may not be in theaters just yet, but it’s already an Oscar® contender. Variety reports that the James Wan film has advanced in the race for the visual effects category. The competition, however, is fierce.
Having seen the film (but not yet being able to review it), I’ll just say that I understand why Aquaman is among the contenders in this category. It will now have to compete with all three of Marvel Studios’ 2018 releases along with other category favorites such as Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Mary Poppins Returns, and Ready Player One.
The current list of films still under consideration stands at 20. The next step for Aquaman is to make the cut when that list is trimmed to just 10 movies from which Academy voters will select the final five nominees.
This is one of the most competitive years for the visual effects Oscar category in recent memory. It’s an honor to even reach this stage of the race, let alone end up as an eventual nominee. Even so, Aquaman has a great chance of being among the final five.
