Aquaman is off to a fast start in China. According to Forbes, the James Wan film earned $1.19M on its opening night in the world’s second-largest movie market. That’s the best opening a DC movie has had in the territory since Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice almost three years ago.
Batman v Superman turned its opening night into $20M on its first day. A similar multiplier would give Aquaman a $17.6M first day in China. Current projections for the film’s opening weekend range from $50M to $65M. Landing anywhere in that range will count as a terrific start.
International box office success paired with positive responses from critics could lead to Aquaman having an even bigger opening in North America than previously expected. We’ve seen this same formula work for Marvel Studios on several occasions.
Warner Bros. has to be thrilled with this early result. The studio is already discussing a sequel internally, but these financial returns may inspire executives to make larger commitments like hiring writers and seeing if Wan will return to direct.
