James Wan’s Idea for a Batman Horror Movie Was Real, but Short-Lived

Warner Bros.

James Wan has previously discussed the dream he once had of directing a Batman horror movie. It turns out that it was a bit more than a mere fantasy. The Aquaman director actually thought about turning it into a serious pitch, but not for very long.

“It was kind of real for like two seconds,” Wan explained on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via Collider). “It wasn’t something I was necessarily going to ultimately pursue. I didn’t pursue just because I felt like, you know, there’s been a lot of Batman stories.

”Which is great, I’m a big fan of the Batman world and the Batman character and I think there are great filmmakers that are going to come in and do great things with this character. I just ultimately decided that it probably wasn’t for me.”

Wan confirmed that horror was the route he would have gone with a “scary version” of The Dark Knight. Given the early success of Aquaman, Wan obviously chose the right DC character to start with. If the stars align in the future, however, I’d still like to see what Wan would do with Batman.
