CW’s Batwoman Pilot Begins Filming in March – Report

Batwoman made a big splash when she debuted on this fall’s CW crossover, Elseworlds. In a Gotham without a Batman, Kate Kane stepped in to try to save the ailing city both with her wealth and the heel of her combat boots. CW ordered a pilot for Batwoman’s potential series, and it looks like it’s set to begin filming before the snow even melts.

According to the HollywoodNorth production blog, the pilot episode will begin filming in March in Vancouver, British Columbia (where most – if not all – the other CW shows are shot). Caroline Dries (Smallville, The Vampire Diaries) is acting as showrunner, and actress Ruby Rose will, of course, reprise her role as Kate Kane/Batwoman. The blog says the pilot will be directed by David Nutter, who handled the pilots for The Flash, Arrow, and a bunch of other shows, as well as having directed an Emmy Award-winning episode of Game of Thrones. Seriously, go look at his IMDb page. He’s directed every pilot ever.

Here’s the official synopsis from The CW:

Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane (Rose) soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.

It sounds like the show will have Kate Kane as a beginner as the show starts up, rather than an experienced vigilante, which gives the writers more room to grow the character. It’ll be interesting to see how Batwoman handles the Batman Question. The CW’s Supergirl stumbled with it at first, calling him The Big Guy or “my cousin” before finally naming him and then, in season 2, casting and showing him. Could we see a CW Batman cast through Batwoman? Or will the show confirm that Bruce Wayne is dead rather than gone, crippled, or missing?

Batwoman doesn’t have an air date, but we’re looking forward to seeing Gotham in more detail this fall if Batwoman does make it to series.
