Joker has wrapped principal photography and now we eagerly await our first glimpse of the film. MTV tried to get a few details out of Zazie Beetz, but she wasn’t about to spoil anything. She was, however, willing to discuss the script.
“The script was great,” she said. “We rewrote the whole thing while we were shooting it. Literally, we would go into [director Todd Phillips’] trailer and write the scene for the night and then do it.
“During hair and makeup, we’d memorize those lines and then do them, and then we’d reshoot that three weeks later. We had to do everything because Joaquin [Phoenix] had lost so much weight that we couldn’t do reshoots later on so we were figuring it out.”
It’s fairly common for scripts to be reworked during shooting. It’s not as common, though, for the entire script to be rewritten. It’s possible, of course, that Beetz was just exaggerating a bit.
It’s also worth considering that the film may involve a lot of improvisation. It’s easy to see Phillips letting Phoenix run with whatever the actor was feeling for The Joker and then reshaping the script to make it all fit.
