Monday turned into an eventful day for those awaiting the upcoming Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) film.
First, Margot Robbie released a teaser image of her as Harley Quinn, and then a video followed showing all of the main cast in their costumes. A few things can definitely be taken away from these images, so lets dive in.
First up, we get a fuller look at Harley’s costume from the teaser image.
Lets just say it looks like the winning entry from the Unconventional Challenge on an episode of Project Runway. There’s a lot going on here, and we’re not quite sure what the sleeves consist of, but it’s a definite look. Noticeably absent is the “Bruce” dog tag from the teaser image, so that makes one wonder if the looks may evolve over the course of the film.
It does, however, appear that Harley has at least one more costume in Birds of Prey.
Of course, without seeing her face we can’t be 100% positive this is Harley, but based on the bat and rings, it certainly appears to be.
Now, lets move on to the rest of the team. One of the most highly anticipated reveals has been Mary Elizabeth Winstead as The Huntress. The teaser wasted no time in letting us know she would have her crossbow.
Then we follow that up later with a full costume shot.
And a further profile shot.
It looks as though the Huntress is all business and she’s going to take you out any way she can. As you can see, she is also drawing a pistol from a holster, so she isn’t going to confine herself to just crossbow bolts. Overall it seems like a pretty practical outfit.
Next up we have Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary. It appears we may be going the torch song singer route.
Of all the characters, she’s the only one we didn’t get a full look at her costume, but we’re still intrigued to learn more down the road about her.
The teaser certainly didn’t give us much to go on for Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain. She seems really proud of her cast, though.
Bringing the good guys to a close is Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya. As an officer of the GCPD, there really wasn’t much that needs to be done.
Chris Messina is playing Victor Zsasz as we’ve never seen him before. Not only with hair, but blonde hair at that. With the jacket on, it’s impossible to tell if he has his hash marks. As it’s one of his most defining characteristics in the comics, it’s hard to imagine they won’t be included in some way.
And last, but definitely not least, is Ewan McGregor as Roman Sionis / Black Mask.
It feels like this may be somewhat of an origin story for Black Mask based on this look. Or perhaps he only wears the mask at certain times. While it isn’t visible in this first teaser, we’re definitely not ruling out the black skull mark appearing at all in this film.
These are early in production images to be sure. Looks evolve in change as the story requires. This should be considered a taste of what is to come as opposed to the final say. It also wouldn’t do Warner Bros. much good to give everything away quite yet.
Birds of Prey opens in theaters on Feb. 7, 2020.
