Today marks one year to the day before Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is due to hit theaters. We just wanted to take a quick look back at where the Birds of Prey movie currently stands development wise.
Characters
After a lot of debate as to where Margot Robbie would next play Harley Quinn, it came down to Birds of Prey. Of course, there had been rumors of a Harley and Joker movie, as well as Gotham City Sirens, but that just isn’t the case. We are, however, also hearing rumors that Sirens may not be dead yet and there could be a potential trilogy forming if BoP performs well.
Should the Birds of Prey movie turn into a hit, then it stands to reason other characters will move between the films as well. With Mary Elizabeth Winstead as The Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, it feels like these are characters you just don’t toss away after one use. Even if BoP doesn’t work, James Gunn has a team to fill out in The Suicide Squad, and that might be an excellent home to take these characters in if needed.
Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya is going to be an interesting one to watch. Montoya shows up constantly in different iterations across Batman-related properties because it’s an easy way to fill out the police force. We have no idea what type of contract she agreed to, but this is a role that could go one for ages.
Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain is another part that could go on for ages as Cain has played so many different parts in the overall mythos. Her potential expansion outside of the Birds of Prey movie isn’t too difficult to imagine.
At first glance, it’s easy to say this could be a one-off for every character, but it really does look as though all of them could move on to other properties if Warner Bros. wanted them to.
Birds of Prey Movie – Plot
As it stands right now, we know pretty much nothing about the plot of the Birds of Prey movie. We know that Harley, Huntress, Black Canary, and Orphan will face down Black Mask (Ewan McGregor), and Victor Zsasz (Chris Messina), but beyond that, we have no clue.
Well, we do know a roller derby is involved somehow.
Speculation seems to be that since the only official image of McGregor so far does not have him wearing the Mask that this may be some sort of origin story and will focus on him more as Roman Sionis.
Judging by all of the set images, we’ll see Harley Quinn changing costumes a lot, and maybe even shopping for pets. The first images of Black Canary finally surfaced, Zsasz and Orphan have been briefly seen in a video, and Huntress finally made her debut on set with some odd lighting. With the Zsasz/Canary cooperation we’ve seen, we may know even less about this film than we thought.
The only major player missing at this point is Sionis/Black Mask.
The Birds of Prey movie will hit theaters on Feb. 7, 2020. Stay tuned for more updates throughout production.
