There has been a lot of confusion over James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Is it a reboot or isn’t it? Now we seem to have another definitive answer.
In an interview with JoBlo, producer Peter Safran stated, “First of all, we don’t call it Suicide Squad 2 ’cause it’s a total reboot, so it’s The Suicide Squad and I think people should be extremely excited about it.” He went on to add, “It’s everything you would hope from a James Gunn script and I think that says a lot and that promises a lot and I know we will deliver a lot.”
The only issue is, we may still be dealing with semantics here based on some of the rumors. We’ve heard both that Margot Robbie won’t return as Harley Quinn, but then she will. There has also been some talk of Viola Davis returning as Amanda Waller.
We may just have to wait for the official cast announcement before we know anything for sure. James Gunn is notoriously tight-lipped about his productions, so it’s doubtful much will be learned until the cameras are actually rolling. But, for now, Safran saying it’s a ‘total reboot’ is probably the most solid information we have to go on.
The Suicide Squad is due to hit theaters on August 6, 2021.
