Jai Courtney tries to clear up Suicide Squad rumors

It appears that actors possibly involved in James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad may be just as confused as the public as to what is going on with this film.

Jai Courtney played George ‘Digger’ Harkness, aka Captain Boomerang, in Suicide Squad. He recently surprised the public by saying he would be returning for the new film, despite rumors saying that Margot Robbie would be the only returning actor. He got a bit of a chance to clarify things when he stopped by to chat with Collider Live.

“I felt a bit weird the other day when I dropped that because it was funny I was just like ‘Yeah, I’m coming back,’ and I couldn’t even remember if I was supposed to say that or not. For a long time I wasn’t even sure if [my return] was going to be the case or not.” said Courtney.

This, of course, could lead one to wonder if he’s really in it, but when asked how he learned of his involvement, Courtney responded that he found out in a pretty solid way. “I got sent the script,”. said Courtney, adding “It’s a great [script], I was surprised by everything [in it].”

The status of this film is definitely a bit of a puzzle with producer Peter Safran recently saying, “First of all, we don’t call it Suicide Squad 2 ’cause it’s a total reboot, so it’s The Suicide Squad and I think people should be extremely excited about it.” However, it was noted that at Cinema Con in Las Vegas this week, Warner Bros. executives referred to it as ‘Suicide Squad 2’ while on stage.

Courtney did imply there has been some confusion, saying, “I don’t really think anyone knows what’s going on, I don’t think anything you read online is going to help clear anything up and nothing I’m going to tell you today is going to help clear that up.” He did go on to praise the script and add some caveats, saying, “People who’ve read the movie and people on Gunn’s team know what’s going on. I think there’s still room for changes to be made yet, I don’t know. I don’t want to take any responsibilities for letting cats out of bags and I don’t know who’s sensitive about what’s being revealed.”

At some point, this will all be cleared up, but it’s just a question of when at this point.

The Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters on Aug. 6, 2021.
