Viola Davis once again said to be returning for The Suicide Squad

Yet another report has surfaced that Viola Davis is coming back for The Suicide Squad, confusing everyone that much more.

About the only things that certain about The Suicide Squad at this point is that James Gunn is working on it and that Will Smith is not returning as Deadshot, beyond that, things are fuzzy. Producer Peter Safran is telling anyone who will listen that the film is not a sequel, but Warner Bros. executives are on stage at Cinema Con saying it is.

Then we have Jai Courtney saying he’s coming back as Captain Boomerang, and there are sources saying Margot Robbie will return as Harley Now we can throw another log on the “it’s a sequel” fire as The Wrap is reporting that a source close to production has confirmed Viola Davis is returning as Amanda Waller. This had already been rumored back in March, but now it’s looking like the new report is a bit more solidified.

There is a rumored list of new characters coming to the film that has been floating around since mid-March, and now it’s beginning to sound more and more as though it may be a mixing of teams. A few from the David Ayer film, a few from Gunn’s new group.

More than likely we won’t have a clear picture on the sequel/reboot debate until someone other than Safran finally speaks up, and at this point, it feels like perhaps only Gunn himself can give a definitive answer. For now, we wait and speculate.

The Suicide Squad is due to hit theaters on Aug. 6, 2021.
