Working with kids is always risky, especially when you take into consideration how rapidly they change thanks to aging. With this in mind, it seems that the Shazam! sequel may end up moving ahead fairly rapidly.
Collider recently asked producer Peter Safran what the plans were for a sequel with the kids rapidly aging. While not a definitive answer by any means, Safran stated, “They’re going to look like Zach does today. So we’ve got to move quickly with the sequel, for sure.”
Warner Bros. has not yet given the greenlight for a sequel, but with the film having cost only $100M to make – not counting marketing and so on – and already having hit $158.77M globally, it isn’t too difficult to see a sequel happening quickly. David F. Sandberg has already said he would like to return to direct, so working out a deal with him shouldn’t bee too difficult.
And with the end credits having set up a possible sequel storyline, it sounds as though there is some form of plan in place.
Don’t be too surprised if a sequel is announced in short order, and it we were to guess, with a 2021 release date targeted. Asher Angel – who plays BIlly – is already 16-years-old, so they would need to move fast to keep those youtful looks.
