Shazam! wins a second weekend at the box office

Shazam! ended its second weekend coming in with a healthy $25.14M at the U.S. box office. A drop of 53% which is just slightly under what you like to see, but not the worst news ever.

The new domestic total now sits at $94.91M, and the global total is $221.21M off of a budget of $100M. When you follow traditional Hollywood math to measure profitability (budget X 2 to account for marketing, distribution, and so on), Shazam! has hit profitability as of this week without too much of an issue.

This doesn’t mean the overall official announcement of the sequel will come at any momemnt, but the studio does seem eager to move ahead, and a writer is said to be onboard.

There are two wide releases next weekend – defined as any movie opening on more than 2,000 screens – but they don’t appear to have much crossover with Shazam!. The first is Breakthrough on Wednesday, followed by The Curse of La Llorona. Neither is going to hit the same demographic audience wise, but the latter will probably end up with number one due to the strength of horror at the box office, and being tied to the The Conjuring series.

Shazam! should have another healthy weekend in it, and we’re going to guess a second spot finish for its third weekend. We’re even going to go so far as to say it will probably hold the third spot with a possibility of the second in its third weekend due to that being Avengers: Endgame weekend and no other new movies are coming out.

Considering the A CinameaScore it earned, the good reviews, and strong word of mouth, it’s looking as though Shazam! will be able to do well for itself for at least a few weeks.
