Batwoman ordered to series at The CW

After months of speculation and waiting, The CW has officially ordered Batwoman to series for the 2019-2020 television season.

Introduced in the 2018 Arrowverse crossover, Elseworlds, Batwoman will follow the titular character in a Gotham that no longer has a Batman. As we saw in her brief appearance in Arrow, Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) operates out of an abandoned Wayne Tower. How many other references there will be to Batman or any other aspects of his life remains to be seen.

In the lead up to the filming of the pilot episode, numerous people were added to the cast. Rachel Skarsten has been cast as Batwoman’s arch-nemesis, Alice. On the side of her allies we’ll be seeing Camrus Johnson (Luke Cage) will be playing Luke Fox, Meagan Tandy (Teen Wolf) will play Sophie Moore, Nicole Kang (You) will be playing Mary Hamilton, Dougray Scott as Jacob Kane, and more.

Along with the announcement came a short teaser video on the series’ Twitter account.

And here is the official synopsis that was released before the pilot began filming.

Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane (Rose) soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.

What we don’t know yet is when the series will premiere. With Arrow having a shortened 10-episode final season, it’s possible the network may elect to hold Batwoman until after that to fill the timeslot it leaves.

All of the broadcast networks will be holding their upfront presentations the week of May 13, with The CW’s taking place on May 16. We should learn more at that time.
