It is not unusual for directors to have favorite performers they work with time and time again. Quentin Tarantino will put Samuel L. Jackson in just about anything. Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro come to mind. For James Gunn, that person is Michael Rooker.

As The Suicide Squad has been cast, James Gunn has seemed to be moving out of his usual circle of performers a bit. Dave Bautista has been rumored for the part of Peacemaker, but that now appears to be going to John Cena due to scheduling conflicts.

Recently, Gunn confirmed he had found all of his cast, but one character we hadn’t heard any rumors on yet was King Shark. Back in March, a possible team roster for The Suicide Squad leaked, and everything had been accurate so far except for King Shark being on that list and no one rumored for that role. Now, thanks to The Wrap, it appears that not only is King Shark indeed in the movie, but it could be going to Gunn’s favorite actor, Michael Rooker.

Best known as of late for playing Yondu in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, Gunn and Rooker have worked together for years. Rooker has actually appeared in every film Gunn has directed, as well as some that he has only produced.

While the report says that Rooker is just in ‘talks’ at this stage, it seems a safe bet some sort of deal will be worked out.

As it stands right now, David Dastmalchian is confirmed as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior is rumored for a genderwapped Ratcatcher, and we still have no clear indication who Idris Elba is playing.

As for returning cast from 2016’s Suicide Squad include Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and possibly Joel Kinnaman as Flagg.

The Suicide Squad is due to hit theaters on Aug. 6, 2021.
