James Wan talks details of the Trench spinoff movie

Warner Bros.

DC fans were more than a bit surprised to learn that James Wan was involved with a Trench spinoff movie from Aquaman. As potential DC movies go, it was a rather odd choice, it seemed.

Things have been fairly quiet for a few months, but now James Wan is out on the promtoion circuit for Annabelle Comes Home, and that’s allowing reporters to ask him for updates.

Speaking with ComicBook.com, Wan said, “We, you know, we’re still deep in sort of crafting the script, crafting the story right now so I don’t want to get into that too much, but definitely it’s one that I really want to lean into the horror of it, so it’s going to play more as a monster horror movie then it will as a superhero film, but it’s still definitely part of the Aquaman world.”

Earlier this year, producer Peter Safran spoke about the Trench and said we should expect to see it before Aquaman 2, which is scheduled for Dec. 16, 2022. “We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie,” Safran told The Hollywood Reporter in March. “Then, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be. And consequently, I suspect that that’s one that will come out significantly before Aquaman 2.”

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see as things develop. Wan has been busy with the latest installment of the Conjuring universe, so hopefully, he’ll be a bit more freed up to get The Trench on the move. While this movie seemed like such an odd concept at first, a DC horror film definitely has us interested.
